Hello everyone. I have more questions based on my reading this thread.http://www.printerknowledge.com/threads/a-handy-refillers-check-list-guide.6491/ (post #10).

One of the posters stated..."Never mix inks from different manufacturers. Always flush the cartridge before using a new ink..."

Here's my situation and maybe others new to this. I only have the original carts at the moment, and according to the well seasoned here, it's best to refill and top off an entire set of carts, rather than just refilling the empty (low) cart to lengthen the life of the waste sponge, via the purge phase. So, if for example, only the black needs refilling, but a few of the other inks are low, to keep with the above recommendation of topping off an entire set of carts, I am forced to mix the OEM ink with the PC ink, in my case. Is this ok? Now, I know Jtoolman's theory is to have a separate set of carts, but even with a separate set of carts, I will still be faced with mixing the OEM and PC inks. So, what to do? At what point do I need to flush the cartridges? If the statement above is true about not mixing inks and flushing cartridges, this may get hectic, so is there an efficient approach to this, or have things change since that post in 2011.

Thanks...Al

The reasoning behind not mixing different manufacturer inks is two fold:

1) Mixing inks from different manufacturers will change the color output for that color.

2) Mixing inks may cause a reaction between the two ink, for example a precipitation.

Caveat - it is generally held on the forum that when one ink is OEM Canon and the other a high quality third party such as Image Specialists (IS) inks, that you can mix the two without incidence other than a color shift which will gradually disappear in a few refills. Unless you are printing color sensitive prints or your prints look poor to you, then mixing inks in this specific setting is OK.

I would not mix inks if I wanted optimal prints such as for selling. Flushing and then refilling the cartridge is best in this circumstance. Otherwise I was OK with the initial mixing of OEM and the IS inks I purchased from PrecisionColors.com.

I may be able to clarify this statement on mixing different inks a little better for you.

It refers to 3rd party inks only and not to the mixing with OEM ink, so it is safe
to mix I.S. inks with OEM inks or OCP inks with OEM inks and so forth.

The big no no was only in reference to mixing any 3rd party ink with another
brand of 3rd party ink, Ouch..

When you change over to using your I.S. ink and mix it with OEM ink you may
get a very slight difference in colour (Colour shift) that is all,
both inks will happily work without clogging up the cartridge.

So there is no need to flush (Purge) out any of your cartridges if you don’t wish too,
most guys just fill up and carry on without noticing any difference at all,
if you wish to profile the new ink then wait till you have filled the cartridge at least twice..

So, does Precision Colors (PC) ink fall under the ok category? I am not familiar with Image Specialists (IS) or does IS produce the inks for PC.

Thanks for the input...Al

Precision Colors sell the Image Specialists brand of ink. It is considered a very good refill ink brand by many forum members, so it is perfectly all right to use.

All of them! LOL
Image Specialists is a USA based ink manufacturer of dye and pigment inkjet inks.
Many 3rd party ink companies regardless of Name or Label are just selling IS inks.
Some companies are also selling specially blended IS ink formulations to bring it as close as possible a match to OEM inks whether Canon or Epson.
A home ink consumer normally can not order directly from Image Specialists but I could be wrong.
