Epson SureColor P600 - Persistent 0x53 startup error

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone familiar with the Epson SureColor P600 can help point me in the right direction. My beloved P600 has suddenly developed a persistent startup error after 7 years of flawless performance.

Symptoms:
  • Error code is 0x53 about 99% of the time (occasionally 0x01).
  • Printer powers up normally.
  • Print carriage initializes and travels across the printer.
  • During initialization the carriage moves in several small, slightly jerky increments before moving normally at full speed.
  • The carriage is not physically stuck.
  • After the carriage initialization, I hear the paper feed motor initialize.
  • Immediately afterwards the printer stops with error 0x53.
Things I've already checked:
  • Carriage slides smoothly by hand with the printer powered off.
  • No paper scraps or foreign objects.
  • Carriage guide rod is clean.
  • Timing belt looks normal.
  • Encoder strip has been cleaned.
  • Maintenance station appears clean and doesn't appear jammed.
  • Cycling power and leaving the printer unplugged has no effect.
The printer has never been dropped or transported roughly.

At this point I'm trying to determine whether this is more likely to be:

  • maintenance station drive
  • maintenance station position sensor
  • carriage encoder sensor
  • home sensor
  • main board
  • something else
Has anyone seen a P600 consistently produce 0x53 with these symptoms?

I'd really appreciate any advice before I start replacing expensive assemblies.

In the WIC Reset Utility this error is described as PF/ASF reset error. ASF sensor failure. ASF motor failure. In the service manual are very detailed infos about this assembly.

Had just had same..ive checked
Everything...still comes up with error0x53..cant seeanything wrong.

This happened after an A4 print went to do another error!
No jamb paper, head moves easy

In fact this printer has been a utter pain
A couple years ago PK flooded
inside of printer, Epson repaired
Was ok for bit, but colours were off even with icc profiles also mono was rubbish, with magenta tint
Its in boot of car ready for tip
Its a big time let down😬
 
Right before it went to skip
I took end covers off
The gear thats splined on to roller feed shaft was laying at bottom of case!
Basically, the splined end had sheared off end of roller shaft ..so using a tight fitting wood dowel inside and Araldite with carefull alignment to match pattern, where it failed, its as good as new
So have a look under cover!
 
I will (as soon as I figure out how exactly to remove the cover) - can't thank you enough for the reply/tip.

So frustrating. I do love the quality of the prints (when it was working) but not the printer. Found a P900 at a good price on Facebook marketplace so I decided to upgrade my way out of the issue rather than continue trying to diagnose/repair the problem.
