This thread should give average use a starting point to show how canon wan't you money and thinks you are stupid to buy smaller cartridges every time they release new printer.

No I think canon reduced the cartridge size remember so if CLI-8 holds 13.6ml the smaller can hold only 9ml. Yes CLI-38 contains 3ml per color and for example HP PhotoSmart C-4280 printer uses color cartridge with 1.5ml ink for each color! now that's crazy. Humm no wait everyone buys them so it must be ok.

The PGI-220 should be the replacement of the PGI-5Bk, so I think it is 19 ml. 9 ml would to little capacity for pigment text black. Could you check it ? The CLI-221 is the replacement for the CLI-8 (9 versus 13.6 ml).

Found this on druckerchannel.de:

the PGI-520 is the replacement for the PGI-5Bk: 19 ml
the CLI-521 is the replacement for the CLI-8: 9 ml

Hope this would clear up. The PGI-520/CLI-521 are used in the latest IP3600, IP4600, MP540, MP620, MP630, MP980 printers. The MP980 has omitted the photomagenta and photocyan cartridges (similar to the MP970) and instead there is an extra CLI-521 grey cartridge to produce colourcastfree B/W photo prints. With the latest 1 pl technology the usage of an photomagenta and photocyan is now obsolete.

Where did you get your data that the CLI-8 cartridges hold 13.6 ml?

Every stat I've read, including Canon's webpage, has stated the volume at 13 ml. And I've found that filling the cartridge completely, meaning no air bubble, results in leaking of ink until the pressure/fluid volumes equalize, so total potential volume is not equal to usable volume.

The CLI-221, PGI-220 are regional versions? because canon.uk does not list them at all. And some sites

Google could you point me to a link where it is said 13ml? I also look for BCI-6 exact capacity.

UK is still Europe, but if UK does use its own regional cartridges the CLI-221 and the PGI-220 then Canon is probably making different chips to confuse possible manufacturers of resetters like they did with regional coding of DVD. I don't no exactly what the difference could be between your CLI-221 and the CLI-521 cartridge or could it be a typo ?
