The change must be something to do with adding a SSD other than AHCI.

NO that issue you have is to do with a task that does not obey rules instructing it to shutdown. It may well be software that installed around the same time as your SSD or software to do with the SSD but in NO way unless its faulty is that screen you get hardware related.
