why do i need this? i have never seen it before. the printer is a years old and prints every day!

Your printer stores all the ink used in cleaning cycles (which run every so often even if you don't tell it to) in a waste area with absorbent pads. There's a counter that shuts off the printer when it thinks the pads are close to being full. You can reset the counter, but if you don't change the pads or install a waste tank, you will have an overflow. Some people have posted their printer overflowed even before the first counter reset. It's much easier to simply re-route the waste ink to an external tank before these issues come up.
