Paulcroft,

What you can do -to avoid spilling of precious Canon ink- is to blow out the ink into the corresponding Hobbicolors UW-8 bottle. Suppose your Canon magenta is -15 % compared to the corresponding UW-8 magenta and suppose the cartridge is half empty (6 ml) and the bottle contains 4 oz (about 120 ml) and I will mix the inks together: -15/(6+120)= -0.12 % off, which is negligible over the total ink amount. Do this with every corresponding colour (put your mouth over the vent hole) and blow steadily until all the ink has escaped the cartridge into the ink bottle, but be careful: at the end the ink tends to foam and can make mess. After the cart and presumable the sponge is empty and nearly dry, drill the hole for the German Durchstich refill method and refill the cartridge with the "mixed" ink in from the Hobbicolors bottle. Execute 1 or 2 normal cleaning cycles and then you are ready to profile your new ink with the corresponding paper the ink is sprayed on.

Next time you will buy a new bottle of Hobbicolors UW-8 ink the colour will be less then 1 % off compared to the mixed Canon/Hobbicolors ink and in real life this is hardly noticable and you can use the same profile and you will not spill ink.

I was using Hobbicolors inks for several years and switched to Image Specialists inks (bought from Precision Colors) about a year ago.
Reason - IS inks come from a known source; Hobbicolors won't tell us the source or country of origin (as far as I can tell from talking to him and comments on this forum).
Price of both is about the same.
Both vendors provide excellent service and quick delivery.
Properly profiled prints from both inks are good.
Longevity of prints is an unknown with both inks.

Just my thoughts,

Steve W.

when using syringes, i used/cleaned a separate needle for each cartridge. good to have spare needles, so whoever you order from best to try to order extras.

i have since switched to squeeze bottles, they take the same needles as syringes. much less cleanup time. see pics at http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=4450

one of our UK members recently started selling kits with squeeze bottles, needles and scabbards all in one pkg

I've been following your other posts in many threads with great interest, Pharmacist. Always helpful, but this one really hit the spot because I am about to attempt my first Durchstich and my first 220/221 refill. (BTW, I agree with one of your earlier posts about the mini-size of these new cartridges. The MP980 is a wonderful machine, but it just sucks the cartridges dry in no time! I was printing mostly B&W but all the color gets used up just the same because of Canon's engineering these things to use the color in B&W printing to clean the heads!!!!)

Anyway, I remember somewhere in this forum there was a discussion about where to obtain sharps that are 2 inches or more. It's not that easy in the U.S. where blunts are the norm for non-medical purposes. I have my ink already but cannot start a Durchstich without proper needles, IMO. Do you or other posters have suggested sources? I've been without my printer for about a month now waiting to get this started right. :(
You can buy long needles and syringes in the US from http://www.inksupply.com/accessory.cfm?action=find&the_cat=1 Scroll most of the way down for the needles.

Hope this helps.

i have been readin back and forth between this thread and the hp564 refilling threads and the more i look at it, the canon and hp cartridges are similar from the tab in the front above the ink nozzle to the clip part. the only difference i see is the placement of the chip and that the hp564 looks taller than the canon's. I have also been looking at my hp 564 cartridges but cant physically compare co i dont have the canon carts.
can anybody who has both carts confirm if they are similar physically from the length, the placement of the front tab, to the placement and size of nozzle and the clip.
I wanna refill my hp 564 carts but with the carts being opaque, i thought about using canon's because they are see through. Ill just transfer my cart's chip to the correct position on the canon if it will fit.
also checking my c309g's printhead and the cartridge receiver looks very much like the canon's, similar resolution too of 9600x2400, except that the hp's is removable.

edit:
went to the local store and had a canon mp560 demoed to me. The canon also has a removable printhead that you have to put in after you first open the box.
the printhead assembly looks so very much like the one on my hp c309g. Both have 2 printhead nozzle set on the underside which i assume are for the black pigment and the photo c/m/y/k. Size of the print nozzle are exactly the same.

I think ill try and buy a set of the carts used in the mp560 and see if it fits in my c309g
