Hi all
When I bought the Epson R3000, I knew I would have to get the refill system to afford printing. I chose Precision Colors for now and was wondering when I should replace the OEM ones. Should I wait until each one empties or go ahead and pull all of them and put the new carts in. As of now, I have about 1/2 empty on some of the black ones since I prefer to print B+W over color.
Another question is if I pull the ones now, can I put them back in at another time without any problems with showing up as same amount as when pulled?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

This is my first post here since it looks like a good forum for information and knowledge.

Thanks
Richard

Welcome Richard:) I have no knowledge about the inks for your printer but we have a lot of people here that can give you the right advice. I have heard that you shouldn't let your OEM ink levels get below a certain point as this makes them unusable for refilling. You will get the full story very soon.

Hi Richard

It is always a good idea to keep a set of cartridges that is known to be good in the event some troubleshooting is necessary. So I'd say to use the cartridges down to maybe around 30-40% and then remove them. That way, you'll have some spare capacity to reinsert them at a later date if it is required. On a printer like the R3000, where the printhead is remote from the cartridges and connected via tubes, there is always ink remaining in the tubes even when the cartridges have been replaced. So changing the cartridges does not have an immediate effect on the printout.
I include ICC profiles for this printer. These will not be fully useable until the system uses all aftermarket inks. The color match is pretty good so ICC profiles are not absolutely necessary but it would be like icing on the cake. Since you print mostly B&W, the ICC profiles will not be of real significance as such, I think you'll probably wait until each colors reaches down to about 30% or so before removal and then stored in a plastic container.

That is about what I thought would be the routine for changing carts but since I am new at lightroom printing, it is good to ask first. I am not totally B+W, so I think i'll print some color before changing. I was amazed at the prints I have printed so far. Looks like it might keep me out of the darkroom for a good amount of time while learning the ropes on printing.

Thanks for the info.

Richard

All of them! LOL
The only printer where I have replaced one color at a time with Precision Colors inks was the Canon Pro 9500 MKII.
In fact I did not even purge the remaining OEM ink from the OEM cart I refilled. Simply refilled with the P C inks and kept on printing.
If there was any change or difference I did not notice it.
Once I was 100% on P C inks, I profiled all the papers I use on it with a Colormunki photo.

Nothing but great prints out of the PRO 9500 MKII!

I can't say the same thing about other brands of 3rd party inks except maybe IJC or Cone. With Cone being right up there!

Why does it seem like the canon 9500M2 it’s a hidden treasure. Been looking for information about it with 3rd party inks and printing quality and paper and the result are small. Thinking of buying a second one just to run it with pc ink and have fun with printing

I've printed with several PRO-9500 and 9500II for years using the original STS inks sold by octoink.co.uk and precisioncolors and the enhanced ink set from the latter and can say in hindsight that there was a lot of room for improvement, in particular on the gloss differences.

I even considered dumping pigment printers and switch to dye for shiny glossy prints.
This was a big mistake since dye refill ink fades extremely fast.

I learned the result with pigments depends a lot on the paper.
Also the inks have improved. I refill my last PRO-9500II (no more printheads available) with ink for PRO-10 and it has become a much better printer.
