Martin now also sells empty Canon carts for a few euro's and they are far superior to any refillable cartridges, because of its superior ink flow due to the double density sponge material.
Thanks, does Martin have a website?
He... *smacks self*... I mean I do... Unfortunately I've only got a single yellow BCI-6 cartridge going begging but you're welcome to it, it if would help.

Buy Image Specialists (Octoink.co.uk or Precisioncolors.com) ink for the BCI-6 series (MP760) and KMP-pigment black for your BCI-3eBK cartridge and you will be very happy with the results. Another good refill ink is Hobbicolors UW-8, which I use myself fo rmy Canon MX850 printer and is compatible for the BCI-6 as well. This ink produces very vivid results and most people like this vivid ink very much.
Yes I was planning on getting the KMP ink as I heard it was the best (although on the page it doesn't say BCI-3EBk is compatible I presume it is). I did have a hobbicolors set a few years ago but I found it a little difficult to use (screw tops) and had problems with leaking and the sponge getting clogged up.
The KMP-Universal is supposed to be good with anything from the BCI-3eBK to the PGI-220/520BK...

KMP ink can be used for many pigment Canon cartridges: BCI-3eBk, PGI-5Bk, PGI-220/520 etc and is by far the best pigment ink, even beter than Hobbicolors own UW BK-PMT ink. Razorsharp and deep black text printing, no clogging and completely waterproof.

Did you check Hobbicolors on ebay ? The previous refillable carts he sells are now only recommended for flushing the printer and you can ask yourself why is this: because the ink flow is inferior to the original Canon carts and Hobbicolors recognizes this problem and sells them as cleaning carts, not be be refilled, because they are not reliable on the long term. Besides: the refill sets from Hobbicolors.com for the BCI-6 series empty BCI-6 and BCI-3eBK carts are combined.

About the leaking: the method of drilling a hole above the ink compartment and with most refillable Canon carts, the slightest hole (when it is not well sealed or the plug is not pushed firmly enough on the cart) will cause th cartridge to leak. That's why the german durchstich refill method is far superior to the traditional method of just drilling a hole and seal it: drill, refill and forge it. No sealing necessary, no leaking, automatic pressure balancing of ink in the sponge.

I use Fotorite ink most of the time and I found it excellent because it doesnt suffer from print head blockages.
That said the black that is on sale on that site is not pigment ink but its still a good black ink, not as good as KMP black..
As said many times before use only OEM cartridges. ;)

It seems like without Canon carts it is not really worth bothering refilling, however even if you gave me that cart free with your ink :D I would still have to buy another 28 worth new (but then again the inks wouldn't match ) or hunt for 4 more Canon used cartridges, which makes me think twice about refilling- maybe I should just try and sell my printhead and buy a new printer with Canon carts included?

Thanks for clarifying.

I just checked and I see you are right! Well that explains the problems I had then! Trouble is I need to find another 4 used Canon carts otherwise this is not going to be very economical for me- don't suppose anyone one on here has any spare :D?

Thank for confirming, I'd prefer to use pigment as I don't want letters/labels to wash away if they get rained/spilled on.

True enough... It is a tricky one but remember that your printer will not need a resetter because it doesn't have chips on it, while a resetter for one of the newer printers would set you back around 20 + P&P.... Of course you might think it was better, so it's horse for courses.

You may laugh but someone just might... I can't remember if the PGI-5's and CLI-8 will fit or not but someone else might... Memory is fading with parenthood it seems... :p

CLI-8 cartridges will physically work fine in printers that use BCI-6 cartridges (but they hold a little less ink).

And PGI-5Bk cartridges will also fit but they don't snap in properly so they won't stay in place.

Contact Dave at Hobbicolors. They sell used OEM cartridges for people to refill themselves. Here is a link to their ebay item:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260640899992&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT

According to the item description the cartridges are already drilled for the traditional refill method from the top. They provide very nice silicone plugs that work really well. I got the plugs from buying their refill kit. I believe you can buy the cartridges only or just buy the kit.

Thanks, I presume since they already have holes drilled in the top they are not much use for the German method though? Hmm... decisions decisions!!

Hi Hazelnut,

you can still use the german durchstich refill method with these carts. Actually the plug can be removed if you want to flush them. So make the hole for the german durchstich refill method and leave the plug untouched for the time being.
