you can still use the german durchstich refill method with these carts. Actually the plug can be removed if you want to flush them. So make the hole for the german durchstich refill method and leave the plug untouched for the time being.

Thanks, still thinking about my options- can the SquEasyFill kits be used for the German method? I heard that they save up on cleanup time- but do you not have to wash the SquEasyFill syringe and cap each time as you would using a standard syringe + needle?

Yes it can... There's been some discussion about ways it can go wrong but a few folks have since posted up their detailed approach on how to avoid the problems.

The beauty of the SquEasyFill systems is that they include an air and liquid tight cap for the needle so you don't have new air circulating around needle and cap drying out the ink. I wouldn't recommend leaving the inks like that for months on end so the occasional check and flush out isn't a bad move but overall it's a lot less fuss.

Just a quick review to add to this thread.

I ordered some KMP ink from OctoInkjet after reading this thread, and have finally got around to using it in my iP4700.

I, like most was very happy with the Canon OEM Pigment black ink. It was always very clear and crisp.

After the OEM ink ran out, I have used about 2 ozs. of Hobbicolors pigment ink. While the results were satisfactory, they were not as good as the Canon OEM ink. The printouts weren't quite as crisp and I did have to clean the printhead (not deep clean) about once every two to three weeks due to very light streaking and missing a few "squares" in the nozzle check.

After my cartridge showed empty again, I first purged it then refilled with the KMP ink. The ink is very high quality. The text (both big and very small) is very crisp again, and the ink is completely waterproof after drying.

I will be a continued customer of the KMP ink. Even though I had to buy it from the UK the shipping was not too ridiculous.

Has anyone compared Precision Colors' pigment black PGI-5 replacement ink versus KMP's?

The Image Specialists' pigment black ink appears good to me and doesn't smear with a highlighter (same as Canon's OEM ink).

I'd be willing to test the two inks head-to-head and post results here if websnail would like to send me a sample.

If anyone has it'll be ghwellsjr as he purchased some Image Specialist PGI-5 compat and KMP from me at the same time (or at least I think he did)...

It's not just only whether it will smear with a highlighter but also whether when printing document where there are black texts over color background will the black text bleeds?

The test I'm planning to do with pigment black inks is determine if they will clog the waste ink pads like the Inktec ink did. Whether I test the quality of printouts is of secondary importance to me but I'll probably also do that.

I haven't tried the Image Specialists Pigment Ink. Maybe I will after my KMP runs out. The Hobbicolors certainly is inexpensive, but the output while satisfactory wasn't as good as OEM in my iP4700. Maybe in other printers (the older ones i.e. PGI-5 and older) it works better?

Thanks for the offer! I don't want to steal food from your family, so I might just purchase some ink from you.

I have a lot of Image Specialists pigment black right now, so I'm going to use up some of it before buying KMP. Maybe ghwellsjr will have submitted his findings between the ink by then and I'll know if it's worth changing over.

What is the difference between the Canon PGI-5BK Compatible KMP Ink - Black and Canon Compatible KMP Universal Ink - Black in terms of print quality and smear resistance?

Thanks for willing to help to test out the print quality aspect. Refreshing what was discussed 2 years back with some inferior black pigment ink, regarding the printout of black pigment text on color background with Plain Paper setting (Standard, Auto Intensity).

Clog issue is the most important aspect but if the print quality is mediocre, then there is little incentive in using pigment on PGI-5 cart, as one might as well refill with better black dye ink that has the right viscosity and density.
