I'm installing a new printhead, do I install it without cartridges and insert them as usual when it's running

I’d do the electrical first, then power on and see what happens next, and if your happy with your work then proceed to installing the print head, small steps and slowly is better, patience is your best friend.. and if all goes well then it’s time to party with a copule of nice prints..

So I finally gained the courage to do it and...it worked!! Well kinda. Works seemingly fine with a 630mA fuse and recognises all cartridges but it doesn't print black. So am I looking at a dodgy printhead here? Ink seems to flow from its waste pipe when the nozzles are cleaned (I have two lines I think one is black only). But no black prints whatsoever. Any test pattern just has no black at all.
