There is a small black push pin thing below two white tabs sticking out between the far left ink cartridge and the side of the ink bay. if you use a small flat head screwdriver you can push this pin in. My suggestion is to push it in and, remove all ink cartridges, remove the ink filter, then release and reinsert the filter and close the filter door. open the door remove the filter. Push it in and wait for your screen to say "Please wait" then release it, push the filter in close the door, then push the ink cartridges in one by one and you should be prompted with a message to close the ink door and from that point your printer should be reset and it should read the cartridges again.

@Justice, Did you ever get this problem figured out? I have the same printer with identical error and have tried the suggestions in this tread. Terrible to have a nice, expensive printer with what appears to be some kind of design flaw that renders it useless after only a year.

What has worked on my 3880:
1. With the printer powered up
2. Open the cartridge door
3. Remove all ink cartridges
4. Wait for at least 30 seconds
5. Reinsert the cartridges, starting from the left
6. Close the cartridge door

If all goes well, the printer should recognize all cartridges.
