I find it particular with the fail-safe bottles it should not be possible to put MK into the PK container; it won't fit. The bottles will not release ink unless the bottle is inserted properly into the right ink slot. It is a very smart solution.

Yes, you are indeed correct, it is a fail-safe smart solution...but only if the MK black and PB black ink have been correctly labeled in the first place.

I's just possible that my PB ink was incorrectly labeled.

I'll drain the PB channel and fill up with fresh PB ink. Hopefully this weekend.
That´s a havy operation on your printer.I have an easy test how to proof if your PB chanel(ink) is conterminated(however you mix it ,the bottels are keyed) with BK ink (pigment).
You will print an nozzle checktest on plain paper ,then smudge with your finger on the PB test pattern ,...if it will smudge like the BK ink(pattern) ,so you have some pigment ink in your photoblack.
See on my picture.(i try it an bouth the BK and PB chanel but only the pigment ink will smudge)
And with the test you see if one or more nozzle are clogged.Only one or two clogged nozzels can deneutrolized your image.

In that case did you buy from a legit reseller ? Epson's quality control is very good and the chances the PK or MK has be swapped is second to none or in practical terms: almost impossible.

just put a drop of water on the nozzle print and let it penetrate by itself and see if you see a black ring after the water droplet has diffused through the paper: rubbing is not a good way to determine it. It should be done by passive diffusion to see.

No ,your finger must be dry ,better you use a clean dry cloth.
With damp finger the dye ink will also smudge/desolve.

I'm using the ink supplied with the printer. I'm assuming the inks are genuine Epson inks?
