@Ink stained Fingers Here is a picture of the cartridges and the nozzle check sorry it's a bit messy I had it in the bin.
 
That's a very popular cartridge type since years for lots of different printers, they just swap the chip holder with a different chip. Did you run the WicReset utility prior to this nozzle check? It just does not look good at all . As mentioned before can you swap the cartridges and check it again with a regular cartridge set which you were using prior to the refill ones.
 
a) didn't you say you only have a problem with black ? That nozzle check looks bad for multiple cartridges.
b) As ISF said, do all the cleaning run nozzle check with some original cartridge.
c) which plugs do you remove when you print ?
 
@te36 I removed the plug that was at the opposite end from the chip. I will try all the different advice tonight when I get home
 
yes, the right plug is for ventilation, the left one for refill.
 
@te36 that was the only nozzle check I could find as they were in the bin the other three colours became better but they weren't consistent some time they produced a perfect check and some time they had lines missing. The black never got any better than the one shown .

I'm not sure that we are getting anywhere yet, we have a pretty incomplete nozzle check, it could be clogs, it could be the ink flow impeded by the refill cartridges, it could be the ink causing these effects and probably some other cause as well e.g. the cleaning unit does not work properly anymore and smears ink residue onto the nozzle plate. And this needs to be tested out - changing the cartridges, changing the ink , running this or that cleaning cycle/method and comparing the outcome.
