I purchased a replacement Yellow catridge for my Canon MX871 MF Printer from an ink shop that when installled I get a "printer doesn't recognize" message & the Alarm lamp illuminates.
Have tried 3 different cartridges froom them and keep getting the same message. The chips are said to be reset.
Purchased three different colour cartridges from them couple of months ago and all worked fine.
Printer purchsed within the last year and is not heavily used.
Any suggestions? :(

I have the MX870 printer and assume it is close to the 871, and using 220 & 221 cartridges. I am doing my own refilling using Image Specialist inks and the only time I got an error message like that was when I accidentally forgot to reset the chip when refilling.

Your message implies a third party compatible cartridge. Any reliable vendor of compatible cartridges should be wiling to help you trouble shoot the problem.

There are a lot of helpful people of this forum so somebody else may come up with a more helpful response

Thanks for your response but refilling my own cartridges is a bit beyond my needs.

I keep hearing about resetting chips. Just what does that mean or entail?
I see there are quite reasonably priced chip resetters available online and the pictures
seem to show a rather basic looking plastic housed device. I'm curious as to what
actually happens with the resetters. :/

simbil: Cartridges (their chips) must be reset, so that printer recognizes the cartridge as full. Without the reset, printer would think cartridge is empty and disallow any further printing. See this movie clip on resetting chip:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQssismfTIs

PrecisionColors.com and OctoInk.com both sell resetter devices for CLI-221 and PGI-220 cartridges.
FYI: Chips are external to the cartridges and are attached to the end of cartridges. Consequently, each
cartridge is equipped with its own chip and therefore each cartridge must be reset prior to refill. These chips
are electronically different for each color cartridge. Therefore chips may not be swapped among the different color cartridges. You might try the search feature of this forum for more detailed explanation of resetting and refilling ink cartridges. Regards

Thanks for feddback Ruffin. The chipsetting looks straight forward enough....how could one go wrong?
But the ink refill establishment gives me replacement cartridges and I continue to get "don't recognize" message.
It has also been suggested that it may be a printer head issue which seems interesting given that all was o.k.
until I replaced the Yellow cartridge (have tried 4 since). Three cart's replaced in recent months w/o problem!
Machine is just 9 months old. I have contacted Canon via the Web, been, acknowledged but have heard nothing
further from them.

The problem that youre having is poor low quality chips from your ink supplier.
What you could try is insert an old empty yellow cartridge into your printer and see if that chip is rejected or just shows empty.

If is shows as empty then it is a good chip and you could remove that chip from the cartridge
and place it on the new full cartridge that you have the problem with.

Then when you insert the full cartridge in your printer again it should show as just being empty and not reject it.
To get the yellow cartridge to work for you just hold in the resume button on your printer
(flashing orange) for about five seconds and you then can resume printing.

If you need to know how to remove the chip from your cartridge than use the link below.

Thanks for all the responses.
Finally gave up with the 3rd party cartridge source, got my money back, over to Staples and purc'd a Canon cartridge ($$$),figuring if it didn't work Staples would have to repair or sub. my 8 mo. old printer. Well, the OEM cartridge works,
end of problem.
Maybe one day I'll work up the courage to get a chip resetter and gear for doing my own cart refills!!!

All of them! LOL
Lesson learned! Most refillable Canon carts are pretty much terrible.
Learn to refill and reset your original OEM carts. If you are careful, they will outlive your printer.
You not have to deal with that problem again.

From what I've read you can't mix the OEM chips and the cheap Chinese chips that are used on most of these clear sealed 3rd party carts. As you said that you were not ready yet to refill yet you can search the forum for a supplier that offers good quality refills and replace them as a full set not one cart as a time. Those Canon carts are a pretty penny! Alternately the windowed 220/221 carts your printer uses are easy to fill and the resetters can be had cheaply lately.

Hey guys! :) So i am having a problem printing yellow on Pixma MX870. When I run cleaning, the test page just doesn't have a yellow line.

I tried soaking the print head in a 50/50 solution of distilled water and ammonia. In the process I could see that all other channels breath (so to say), but yellow nozzle wasn't at all as if it was clogged.

So I came to the conclusion that it was clogged, but I am surprised that soaking overnight didn't' help to unclog it.

I already ordered a new print head, but was wondering if any of you guys had this problem and what solution you came up with.

Also... do I need to check anything else to prevent such clogging in the future? Say, do I need to clean the purge unit somehow?

Thank you so much any input!
