DavidBailey and All,

I sent an inquiry to the company that said they have cartridges for the iP4200, and got the following answer:

Dear Mr XXXXXXXXX,
Very thanks for your inquiry from Globalsources website. We could supply those
ink catridges for the printer IP4200, but have no chips at present, even in the whole
line of print consumables. But we have the users' manual for the customers to instruct
them how to take out the chip from the used up ink cartridge to the new compatible ink
cartridge. So the cartridges could work on the printers normally.
Based on your requirements, I want to quote the unit prices of those four items as follows:
5EBK USD1.50
8BK USD1.20
8C USD1.20
8M USD1.20
8Y USD1.20
This is the FOB Shenzhen price.
We hope you could let me know asap if you could accept these prices.
We are looking forward to receive your earliest reply.
Thanks
Rgs

Tania did not answer my inquiry concerning smaller quantities or US distributors. It is interesting that they say on the web page that the ink comes from USA and the sponge comes from Japan.

I did reply and regretfully informed Tania that I could not use the cartridges without the chip.

Hello all. I just found this website and am happy to get/provide info on this topic.

I currently am using Canon ip3000 and ip5000 printers refilling with ink from oddparts.com and things are working out well for me. I just recently learned how to clean the printheads and that is a big plus.

I like to keep up to date on the new product lines so have been following the Canon chipped tank story.

FYI, Swiftink.com is now offering tanks to replace Canon's CLI-8 and PGI-5 with instructions on transferring over the chip from the old tank to the new tank. You can read those instructions on their website.

Can anyone tell me if these new Canon tanks are transparent? Trying to refill opaque tanks has got to be a lot harder.

Another question. The Canon ip3000 printers are going for big bucks on ebay. One just sold for $167. There are a couple on Amazon for $290! I bought a couple of these printers in early 2005 for $50 each. Are people willing to spend so much for these printers just because they can buy tanks from the competition for $4-5?

It's probably because they can refill their own tanks for less than $1 and yes, they are clear.

But I have a question regarding refilling Canon chipped cartridges: What hassles do you have to put up with if you just refill OEM chipped cartridges? Aside from the threat of terminating the warranty, will the printer let you reuse the same OEM refilled cartridges indefinitely? If that is the case, what is the problem?

It's reported that you no longer get a warning when the ink level runs low.

Has anybody noticed that the tank in the chipped cartridges is smaller than the previous non-chipped cartridges? That's right, the chipped tanks are 3/4 inch deep compared to 7/8 inch for the non-chipped version. That, along with the increase in price of 20% raises the cost of ink by 40%.

Unchipped tanks are available from swiftink.com for about $4. Instructions fro transferring the chip are on the website and also are shipped with the replacement tanks.

Hi all
Special thanks to canonfodder and websnail for your informative answers.
It looks as though the people at CN manufacturing were being a bit over ambitious with their claims of making a compatible cartridges for the canon Pixma IP4200 etc.
and the only solution is to adopt the CIS or cartridge refill solution.

Very annoying - would you buy a new car that would only use the manufacturers own VERY EXPENSIVE brand of oil filter!

Websnail,
In a recent reply about a CIS system for a HP printer you refered to a seller on ebay - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....80044698949&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT&rd=1

This seller also has a CIS system for the ip4200, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Canon-Pixma-E...QQihZ018QQcategoryZ101307QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Have you or anybody tried this system, from the description it does seem to meet most, if not all the requirements for a good CIS.

Also websnail, I also live in England (a bit further south than Yorkshire in Notts) I see that you use ink from "Image Specialists", is it possible to obtain smallish quantities in the UK and if so where from.

Yep, I've been in contact with him today as it happens.

As it goes I've asked him if I can borrow a kit for review but as yet had no answer.. The things I'm rather interested in learning about are the grommets he's got available as well as the low profile cartridges as they resolve a couple of problems I've seen in my iP4200 and MP500 homebrew/ self-build efforts. I may just decide to buy one anyway as I'm already planning on buying a set of their HP88 spongeless tanks (with auto-reset chips) so I can create a CIS for my K550.. The space to watch if I do is the reviews forum on continuousink.info but I imagine it'll be a while yet.

I'll drop you a PM about that now.. :) but for anyone wondering it's basically me who has a small stash of their ink so I'm happy to resell some of that. Someone else may know of a more formal retailer for their inks but as yet I don't know of one.

I am trying to find some supplier of G&G ink and/or OEM cartridges with G&G ink that would ship overseas. Does anyone know of a such company?

Thanks!
