The company representative for ThINKtank at www.thinktankuk.com did reply with permission for their Canon CLI cart resetter instructions to be put online here at Ink Jet Refill Forum.

The company representative wishes to remind forum members that "The unit is designed primarily for refilling stores and as such is quite expensive."

There are two documents. The complete instruction sheet, and an addendum sheet which explains some details concerning newer efforts by Canon to inhibit resetting and how it is dealt with by this resetting equipment.

Grandad35 has graciously aided in providing the links for the information. See:

Looking at the construction of this resetter it will be very probable that next year a resetter will be available under $ 50. And there are strong and persistent rumours on druckerchannel.de that at the end of this year or beginning next year aftremarket carts will be available with reversed engineered chips on it.

I found the PDF file at refillinstructions.com while looking at refilling options for Canon CLI-8 cartridges (http://www.refillinstructions.com/Canon/C23.htm). The link to the chip resetter is found towards the bottom of the page: (http://www.refillinstructions.com/Canon/canon-reset.pdf).

I also found a lively discussion on this chip resetter, including posts by someone that acquired a resetter and his experiences: (http://www.imagerzone.com/ForumsPro/viewtopic/t=13875.html).

Someone call me when these get well below US$100.

I have heard some rumour that once a PGI-5 or CLI-8 cartridge is reset by one of these resetters, it still cannot be used on the printer in which it was firstly used previously as Canon has build in a memory function to record all cartridges that are ever used in a particular printer.

Does anyone know whether this is true?

My memory is tickling me slightly on this and it may be true of some of the newer models... this may in fact be where the whole theory came about re: the iP4300 and compatibility issues (but that's another story and a wild-assed-guess :p).

I've read that if a reset cartridge is reinstalled on the same printer it will act like a non reset chip-won't show ink level. I've been led to believe that Atlantic Inkjet keeps track of where cartridges come from so you don't get the same ones back. I also understand Swift Ink will soon be selling reset oem cartridges.

Does someone knows after how much time this tracking system of Canon is disabled, the memory of the tracking is full and will forget the first resetted ones (just like the HP printers once did with their cartridges) or is this memory indefinitely, which is probably unlikely ? Maybe you can reset this internal memory with a special reset procedure, like you can do with resetting the ink waste full warning.
