simbil: Cartridges (their chips) must be reset, so that printer recognizes the cartridge as full. Without the reset, printer would think cartridge is empty and disallow any further printing. See this movie clip on resetting chip:

Yes, lighter black is correct for duplex printing (printing both sides of paper). This is intentional to preclude darker print from interferring with the readability of print on opposite side. No workaround as per gigigogu.

Iandee: Try Canon OEM cartridges with Canon ink. Do cleaning process with Canon ink and then retry printing.
If successful, then try refill with Image Specialist ink from Precision Colors or Hobbicolors ink from EBAY. Refillers this forum report success with both.

Select Printer button
Select IP4300 As Available Printer
Click OK
Select Printer Settings Button
Uncheck Grayscale box
