Things have moved on with 3D printers since Nifty posed the question on these fascinating new gadgets.

I have just learned the other day that a Technician here in Trinity College has/ is devising a way to make Human bones from Stem cells and adhesive using a 3D printer.

Ok its only in the development stage right now, (Animal testing) but give it a couple of years and you might be able to replace damaged and crushed bone with this technology, yes folks the implant will then GROW inside you to be as good as new, beats the hell out of simple ICC profiling and colour longevity.

Now where did I put that bit of finger that was chopped off last week...

Right now I have quite a number of things I could use a 3D printer for. ..all light custom tooling to integrate some pneumatics with some dedicated electronic controllers to flush cartridges, and then blow them dry. Custom tooling. I also have the plans for an automated filling machine in my head. The problem is that I have the interest and the need but the tools to use the 3D printer would require a learning curve. Eventually I am sure I could master it given sufficient time.

This place

http://www.newmakeit.com/equipment

is only 10 minutes away and gives me access to all the listed equipment for joining. Everything I always wanted!
The Objet24 printer is possibly something like what Jose was describing and I had a sample of its work in my hands during an open house. The output is smooth enough for many items. The makerbot z18 was not there when they had the open house.

All I would need to pay is the consumables and the monthly membership fee.

Well sometime down the road I have to relearn CAD and its integration into these tools. That was but a dream when I graduated. The IBM mainframe could not manipulate a 3D perspective.. What a time to be young and tech savvy today! maybe I will take some courses this winter!

How cool. Some of the classes were things we did in summer camp. Other were not even possibly back then. I could easily go to a few of these. Too bad none in Ohio.
There’s no point in dreaming my Son. As a neighbouring country’s Prime Minister once said “On Your Bike”, in your case it has to be the Harley... :D

I think you would be surprised with the interest. With today's Arduino capabilities and access to stepper motors I know of at least one person who is interested in building one for himself.
And now that desktop models (albiet low end) go for less than an inkjet printer there should be considerable interest.

My criterion is: can it be refilled and also refilled cheaply with aftermarket filament ?
