Hey everyone, this is my first post here so I hope I am going about this the correct way. We have an Epson Artisan 1430 that suddenly started acting up in the last couple weeks. Basically we are totally unable to get a clean print from the printer. We've run the Nozzle Check, Head Cleaning and Alignment, all to no avail. It's difficult to describe exactly what the printer is doing, so I've attached a few photos which I hope will help. Basically, the printer is randomly printing swatches of color on top of whatever else it is printing. We've tried everything we can think of to solve the issue but have not found a solution just yet. Any light you might be able to shed on the problem would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Just a question, have you ever remove the printhead from the printer to perform external head cleaning before? And is this printer purchased as first hand and not second hand/used from someone?

The printer was purchased new about about three years ago. We've never done an external print head cleaning because we've never really had the need to do so. Is that a difficult proceedure?

Please post a nozzle check. Has anything been changed recently at or with this printer -e.g. placed somewhere else and connected with another, longer USB cable ? Or connected to another computer ? Driver update, or now running on Win 8.1 instead of XP or something else like that ?

That randomly printing swatches of color that appear in whatever you print or even when you just merely print a nozzles check, is due to the golden pin on the printhead cable not inline with the printhead connector/motherboard aka circuit board connector or the cable golden pin is broken/torn/bend at the end.

It occur when someone unplug the printhead cable from the printhead connector or circuit board connector and the golden pin at the end of the printhead white cable is not inline or not inserted deep enough to the connector pin slot on the printhead and/or circuit board when they try to reinsert back the cable to the slot.

It can occur also when the golden pin on the printhead cable end is bends or broken/torn during removal of the cable and reinsertion to the printhead connector/circuit board connector.
The blue plastic tab on the printhead cable ends can become easily fell off or become misaligned during printhead removal and reinsertion.
The printhead white cable can also become lose from printhead connector whatever reason that may cause it such as someone accidentally meddling with the printhead plastic slider that use to secure the printhead cable position. Or when someone who clean the printhead inside the printer by placing wiper cloth/kitchen paper underneath the printhead, when they were removing the cloth paper, they use so much force or not being gentle/careful the cloth/kitchen paper accidentally touches the printhead cable and loosen it slightly.

This randomly printing swatches of color has nothing to do with other reason other than the printhead cable. This is quite well known problem to the China technician who repair printer because people tend to remove the printhead for external printhead cleaning or remove the motherboard to replace board or check the fuse on the circuit board. So do not go about performing unnecessary printhead cleaning via software to make matter worse. You need to know what causes it. The answer is the printhead cable.

You need to narrow down to one area first during troubleshooting the printhead cable, afterthat print, check and see the result before you proceed to the other area (motherboard connector area). Start with printhead area first. You need to find someone who is experience to remove the printhead and detach the printhead white cable from the printhead and then reinsert the printhead cable back to the printhead. Make sure it's inserted deep enough and the gold pin on the cable is inline with the pin on the printhead connector slot. After that print and check the result.

In my opinion, if the printer housing has never been dismantled before rarely will it occur with the motherboard/circuit board area where the printhead white cable connect to the circuit board printhead connector slot.

So I haven't changed the printhead, but I was getting ready to since I had a new printhead ready to install. So I installed the new printhead. During the installation all the connections looked good. So now I have a new printhead and it is still doing the same thing. See attached picture of the nozzle check. Every time I print the nozzle check or anything it looks different.

So I've tried
* restalling drivers.
* different cables
* different computers
* different printheads
* wireless printing
* different cartridges
* ciss vs carts

Thanks everyone for your help.

the nozzle check is of pretty low resolution and does not show very much to me, but you have tried really very much to identify the problem, if the problem persists after all these different tests there must be something else we have not considered yet, but I must admit I'm running out of options at this time. Your tests indicate that the problem is with the printer, not with software, Windows, other hardware, cables etc. It might be, as a remote option, the firmware playing the color spots. There is a software WICReset which allows the change of firmware of a range of Epson models, not for free, but this software would tell you for free in the status report particular error conditions and you could identify with this program whether it would allow you to change the firmware at all.
