I asked for clarification and you provided it.

I have no idea from your post if you understand the boldfaced text in my last post. It is one-half of the reason for volume discrepancies you have noted. There is more than one way for Canon to utilize or not the interior space of the cartridge for ink volume.

Just seems strange to me because only the sponge can absorbe at least 4 ml of ink.
Given the OEM fill amounts per Canon, this is not strange at all. What did you expect?

Do you weigh the cartridge before refilling? How do you know how much residual ink is in the sponge/cartridge and therefore how much ink to refill?

Also leaves almost always the upper part of the sponge unsaturated
Unless you are using ARC chips or a chip resetter, then eventually you will need to disable ink level monitoring for this model printer/cartridge to use refilled cartridges. You will always need to babysit your printer, as The Hat said, in order to be ready to stop printing if/when ink starvation occurs or else risk irreparable damage to the print head. Sooner or later you will need to flush the cartridge to restore good ink flow. This is the nature of your printer / cartridges.

Disabling ink level monitoring is never a desirable thing to do. It is a last resort. It is manageable with continual vigilance. People who sell you ink are not going to be paying for a new print head or printer for you.

Because of my cli 581 experience propablly cli 251 std and xl cartridges maybe have the same ink chamber and just fill them with different amount of ink

I agree......when you refill you have to deal with the risks

You were huge on the drip method of refilling. What happened?
I refill with the syringe, and use the drip method for topping up, but that is using a redsetter on a completely different cart.. No risks involved not like these CLl-581 carts..

Not exactly what I was asking.

You said:

"Octopus refil method is to just saturate the sponge with 4-5 ml.
I have mention that and i have say: Just seems strange to me because only the sponge can absorbe at least 4 ml of ink."

To which I said:

"Given the OEM fill amounts per Canon, this is not strange at all. What did you expect?"

Maybe we are experiencing some confusion due to language. :idunno

To me, you seem to be saying it is strange that the drip method only gives fill amounts approximating OEM ink volumes for a standard cartridge. No, it is not strange but rather expected given cartridge design. The drip method would give similar ink volumes with the XXL cartridge unless a larger sponge is used.

Going back to my post with the quote from Octopus:

"The method of refilling demonstrated in this tutorial - dripping ink onto the cartridge´s sponge - saturates the sponge material inside the cartridge only. The XL versions of PGI-580 and CLI-581 have an additional, spongeless ink tank in their rear section - by dripping ink on the sponge no ink is going into this tank."

Why do you suppose this happens - only the sponge takes ink?

You've said where you drill the hole is important. Why?

Maybe someone can post an image of the 281/681 cartridge opened up on the sagittal/longitudinal axis.

I bought them as well and I get an error message saying that the colors are not original and I should not use them. Is it an update issue or something else? I tried updating my drivers as well after I managed to download them from https://printerspage.net/hp-laserjet-pro-m15w/ and it still didn't work. I'm not really sure what to do, as I would hate to go back to buying original OEM ink cartridges. With the amount of printing needed to be done, I would be bankrupt in a few weeks. I even read the manual of the printer twice trying to understand what went wrong.
