@stratman.

You are accepting of the fact that Microsoft is run by pre-pubescant four eyed, fiddlers that have not yet encountered mental, moral or social puberty.

Patches allowed the system to continue year in, for decades.
These muppets see Apple screwing the public (that has NO alternatives) and have a brain fart that is Win 10 .....everyone does what everyone else is doing it because everyone else is doing it.

I may be alone on an Island, shield and sword in hand shouting pointlessly into the ether!!!

Golly gosh its FUN!!! Beats the crap out of being numbly submissive, however pointless.

Didn't we cover this topic before with you?

I don't think so..
Yes. But I know you are better than this.
Don't be so sure. Old age is unforgiving

Are you sure the custom profile was not on the drive and only needed to be selected again? Regardless, you had a backup, just like you should for things like custom monitor profiles. Easy breezy resolution.
Yes, not a big deal, just retrieve my good profile in the profiles menu. But why they do this ?.Just to show that they are the boss and we only powerless users ?
First, if you had deleted the files then you wouldn't have been able to revert back to the older Windows 10 version. Second, these old files will be deleted automatically after a period of time. Third, unless something has significantly changed, you can manually delete the old files, even Microsoft has directions on how to do it. Other web pages discuss how to delete the old files and are easily found on Google such as this and this.
- First : I make monthly backups of the disk C: (the whole partition). With 2 disks in my computer, simply changing the boot preference in the Bios, the system starts from the second disk and from it I restore the WIn10 partition to the first one. No problem even if the whole disk was erased by accident.
- Second: How many time before they delete the "trash" ?. As I don't want to inflate my monthly backups with 25Gb from the old win old folder, I prefer to delete it myself. I'll take a look at the links you posted about deleting old files..thanks for the tips.
In fact, I have an utility that allows to change permissions to access any file. But it's time consuming because if you try to change at once the properties of those huge folders with hundred, even thousands of files inside, this utility can't cope and crashes, You need to change permissions only to a limited amount of files each time. Boring and exasperating. Yes not a tragedy but, again, why Msoft feels the need to annoy and complicate unnecessarily the life of the customers ?- Isn't easier to ask, once the updated is finished, if you want to keep the old Win folder or delete it on the spot?.

Which is the current WIn10 version ..1903 ?. If I decide to update, probably it won't go from 1709 directly to the current one, but first to the 1803, then I'd need to upgrade from 1803 to the next one.. and so forth. Not my idea of a happy summer. I think I'll wait until Christmas ..

There are so many different ways to organize backups, I backup the system drives always after the monthly patch updates - the 2nd Tuesday in a month.
You can easily remove patch/update related and lots of other system related files just with a few clicks, just call up the property window of your system drive

Win 10-1.jpg

Hit the 'cleanup' button and you get the window on the right, here you can select lots of different file types for removal, just click 'System file cleanup' again and you get an additional window to select more files

Win 10-2.jpg

including files related to patches and updates. You do your selections and confirm OK, it may take a while if you selected gigabytes for cleanup - it does not need your intervention anymore - you see - it's a matter of just a few clicks to get rid of them.

I have been happy with the combination of Macrium Reflect in combination with bcvkup2 https://www.bvckup2.com/
I don't ever feel the effect of the real time backup. Well written code.

I really wonder how many actually backup their win10 etc.

You should not need that utility to delete the old Win folder files. Unless things are different with the current major update, deletion is much easier than you fear.

Yes. You can see this in the second image I posted earlier concerning updates.

I think a major update for Win 10 is released every half year. It looks like the format of the version numbers is YYMM. I expect the next update to be released in September and named 1909. Maybe Microsoft got the idea of two major updates per year from a "competitor" ?

Well as it turns out the latest 1903 with the updates as of yesterday has messed something up. Systems boot and work fine but I am finding out this morning that how the system now handles XML has changed and affects datasets. So I am unable to complete my shipping workflow. I use a program that creates a set format for data for the US customs to integrate into their system. The conversion is no longer working properly.

So I am now in the middle of restoring a pre update system image to get today's work completed.

Why not just uninstall the updates you believe caused the issue instead? Windows 10 makes it extremely easy.

Win 10 Build 18936.rs_prerelease.190705-1333 installed 11 July. Download and install to a usable PC took roughly 14.5 hours.

Most of that time, 10 hours, was install time.

As soon as the program asked for a restart, I was there to restart it. That took almost 4 hours. During this time the PC was totally unusable.

Fortunately I could do much of what I needed from my tablet.

My internet averages 75 Mbps per and runs up to 150Mbps per.

The PC is a 14 year old Dell 545 with Intel® Core™2 Q9400 Quad processors @ 2.66 ghz and 8 GB of RAM. Windows 10 has been running fine, with minor tweaking early on. It is not the fastest kid on the block but is should not take that much time to update.

BTW, the prior 2 updates have run smoothly and were fairly fast.

I like this update. The PC feels faster thanks to some of the production tips and so far all software and devices work.

I am a fan of the fast track but 14 hours is a bit much.
