Wireless printer setup has become beyond my pay grade. I'm starting to think the wireless radio has malfunctioned.

Helping a friend with their Canon MX860. The printer has been functioning appropriately as a wireless printer using an ATT U-Verse wireless router (Model 5268AC FXN) as its access point until 3 days ago. The printer was not hard wired to anything (except power). The ATT U-Verse wireless router is part of a package that includes Direct TV satellite television.

Internet and TV all work fine and I can see the SSID's of wireless devices with my Kindle, including the wireless router, but NOT the SSID of the printer. Looking at the WLAN settings it shows the WLAN is INACTIVE and I cannot turn WLAN on using the LCD control panel on the printer. Not good.

I have uninstalled and re-installed the software numerous times using the most current drivers and utilities (Win 8.1 x64 versions). These were the ones installed previously, so I know they did work. The firewall is not blocking the install. The notebook OS is Windows Home 10 x64.

The Canon IJ Network Tool does list several broadcasting SSID's, what it considers "access points", but the ATT U-Verse wireless router's SSID is NOT listed. I have tried manually setting the access point in the IJ Network tool but it does not make any difference.

The IJ Network Tool shows the LAN port setting for the printer is USB0001 (IIRC) but does show an error about the port setting, IIRC, is "There are ports that cannot be used with their current settings."

The printer will print if plugged into the USB port on the notebook. The notebook is the only device used for printing.

If I cannot make "ACTIVE" the WLAN radio on the printer then it seems to be game over for wireless printer function. I have suggested workarounds such as plugging the printer into the ethernet port on the wireless router or using a wireless print server but these were not suitable compromises. Bringing the notebook to the printer to plug it in to the printer is a temporary solution. A new printer is more to their liking.

Any suggestions?

Thanks anyways. I knew this wasn't your forte. :hugs

Networks and WiFi can get a little complicated for me as well. I've reached the end of my knowledge base with the printer.

stratman(and hat):

long time, guys. still refilling here. my last MP830 died, so now am onto my stored MX860/870s.

my MX870 had a similar issue when it's WIFI stopped even though it's SSID was still seen on the network it would not accept any print jobs.

i struggled with it for a while, trying to get it to work. what finally worked for me was to completely remove and reinstall from scratch.

here's a link that should help
https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/...rinter/mx-series/pixma-mx860?tab=wirelesshelp

i'll also attach the WINDOWS PDF

make sure to follow the directions to begin the install with a USB cable attached. if you skip that step(like i did...) it will fail

Thank you for the link and downloadable file for the network installation guide.

WIFI stopped even though it's SSID was still seen on the network
I wish I could see the printer's SSID!

Two things that are not working for me are
  1. Page 7 - I cannot turn on the printer's WiFi as instructed in Step 6. It is listed as INACTIVE when I look at the Wireless LAN Setup List seen in Step 5 on Page 7. I have never seen the printer's SSID when checking for wireless signals with either my Kindle or the notebook. The Printer's SSID cannot be hidden as far as I know in the way you can hide the broadcasting of a wireless router's SSID.
  2. Page 14 - I have never seen the wireless router's (access point) SSID as I should in Step 4. However, I do see the wireless router's SSID on my Kindle and, of course, the notebook which relies on it for internet access. Trying the Manual Setup (seen in Step 4) does not work either. Most likely the reason is the printer's WiFi radio is inactive and unable to be turned on.
Something is confusing to me about the instructions in your link. On Page 7, Step 7, after turning on WLAN (which I have not been able to accomplish), it says to turn off the printer and connect the USB cable to the printer and computer. BUT, on Page 13, Step 2, you are instructed to connect the cable to the printer and computer and then turn on the printer. If I followed the instructions explicitly then the USB cable was already attached to printer and computer since Page 7.

begin the install with a USB cable attached. if you skip that step(like i did...) it will fail
Please clarify. When it is that you attached the USB cable in order to successfully complete the install? (Page # and Step # from the guide you linked)

Thanks Jimbo.

my last MP830 died
My condolences. :hugs I rue the day that happens. :hit

keep me posted.
I have varied in only one way from the instructions you linked. I have not connected the printer USB cable until the install software ask me to.

To clarify, the instructions you linked say

Select Wireless LAN active and press OK

Press On button on the printer to turn it off.

Connect the USB cable to the printer and computer.

I have waited to connect the USB cable until the following step:

When the Printer Connection screen appears, make sure that the USB cable is attached to the printer and computer, and turn ON the printer.

Now I'll try connecting the USB cable earlier in the process as your instructions state (red text).

However, I still have yet to see the SSID of the printer broadcasted as it should after selecting "Wireless LAN Active" and pressing OK as the instructions state (blue text). This is a critical issue, IMO, which I have been unable to find an answer or a fix. If the WiFi radio in the printer doesn't work then game over for wireless.
