I tried to today with diminishing the amount of ink on the paper (from -20 till -25 %): still smudging and easily being rubbed off. However: matte photo paper and normal paper do work well with the pigment ink. The types of photo paper, used in my pigment test on the Canon i9950, all produces smudge free results with my Epson Pro 3800 printer with Image Specialists K4 pigment ink.

Therefore all suggestions would be much appreciated to help me to combat this very problem.

Is you are using the same inks in both printers and get different results it may be only 2 possible causes that makes the ink from rubbing off.

A. Is possible that the Canon i9950 is mixing the pigmented color with the R/G dye inks some how.

B. The method use by the printers to apply the ink to the paper (cold vs. heat).

Like you told me in your email, you probably need to some how produce the red and green by mixing colors, very challenging but maybe your only way to see if the printer is using those colors and causing the ink from rubbing off. Since you are not using the Red & Green in your Epson Pro 3800 I will think that the problem is most likely the dye inks getting mixed in the printing process.

When examining the Canon web site for compatible photo papers for their MX7600 (which uses pigment inks), they reference their same papers as for their dye based printers. That is not encouraging, but they may not expose their prints to the same rigorous tests as you have devised. The MX7600 printer does use a clear coat as a final part of the printing process. Their Pro9500, which uses the same inks as the MX7600, does not use a clear coat. This makes me think that you may be forced to spray a lacquer clear coat after the ink dries.

Lopor1,

The dye ink should not interfere with the adhesion of the pigment inks as shown with my previous posts wherein I used the paper setting "other photo paper" by which the R + G inks are automically omitted and the printing falls back to the standard CcMmYK printing method (see the rub off test with my pencil eraser: with glossy photo paper extra the red and green inks shine through when all the pigment inks have been rubbed off, but with the setting "other photo paper" all the ink can be removed).

Somehow the Epson pigment ink is far superior on all types of paper, as this type of ink is very tenacious to smudging.
I think I maybe should mix some dye ink into it to see how the physical behaviour of drying and penetration degree into the paper can be changed or perhaps improved.

Hi, this is a very interesting topic. I notice that inkjetcarts.us are selling Canon Pro9500 pigment inks. I assume these should work well or better than the HP ones used in this test. thanks

I am looking at their website. Do you have experience with the pro9500 pigmented inks in a i9900/i9950 ?
