Has anyone tried the refillable cartridge sets for the ip4500. I have seen these on ebay UK and one company online.

They have a small coloured plug in the top of each cartridge and you can get these with or without a chip. They are 14.99 empty with chips on Ebay.

Are these any good or should I go for refilling by the German method :/.

At the price it would seem to be worth ago.

Don't buy those cartridges. The problem is the sponge material, which is much inferior to the original Canon cartridges. I have those refillable cartridges before -with and without sponge- and these are terrible. Maybe good for one or 2 times of refilling, but then the troubles begin with ink being fed poorly to the printhead.

Just go for refilling your original cartridges with the German Durchstich method and choose some quality ink like Hobbicolors UW-8, Image Specialist or Inktec ink. For text black go for the superior KMP pigment ink, which is completely water- and highlighterproof.

Thanks:) I'm looking at Inktec ink. Can you point me towards the right inks for my printer.

Inktec ink is good, but unfortunately I tested those inks and I am not so satisfied with the fade resistance of those inks. Hobbicolors UW-8 is far better in terms of fade resistance (as stated on the items sold at ebay). However the magenta is stronger than the original Canon CLI-8 magenta and looks like it should be called vivid magenta. Having said this, this probably is one of the factors of the increased gamut of the Hobbicolors UW-8 inkset.

One caveat: choose the PMT version for text black and not the pigmented PMD black if you want full waterresistance of your text printouts for the PGI-5Bk. the PMD version contains some dye and this might smear out when your paper becomes wet.

I'm not too concerned about the black smearing on text if it gets wet! I do a lot of photos so which would be the best black to use in the PGI-5BK for that.

Then you you go for the cheaper PMD version, all the other colours in the dye CLI-8 cartridges are the same. The Hobbicolors UW-8 are not only very good refill ink but also very cheap even if you calculate the shipping cost in your total order price. Have a try, you won't be disappointed !

That's the one you can buy. There are some forum members who have succesfully used those blunt needles to refill the cartridges using the German Durchstich method, but I personally would buy some sharper needles (at least 2 inches long).

You probably have found my pictures showing step by step how to refill using the German Durchstich refillmethod:
