Pigment or Dye? Does the printer driver choose? (Canon ip4500)

For what its worth:

I have a Canon iP4000 and have experimented with different printing modes.
Here are my observations. The pigmented black is only used when plain paper mode is used. When plain paper mode is used there are also quality selections, High Quality, Standard, Draft and Custom. When I printed text/graphics from a PDF file the printer used Pigmented black ink to print both the text and graphics.

Using any other setting for paper will make the printer use the dye black for text and graphics. That is why it takes longer to print the same page using any other mode than plain paper.

The above are only my conclusions, others may have different opinions.
