Canon has fought back with these latest chipped cartridges. Less bucks but less pages as well and much more expensive in usage !
Chipped like the CLI-8/PGI-5 cartridges but containing much less ink:

CLI-512 dye: 9 ml (CLI-8: 13 ml)
PGI-520Bk: 19 ml (PGI-5Bk: 27 ml)

The latest printers using these cartridges:

normal printers: IP3600, IP4600 (both have photoblack installed)
multifunctionals: MP540, MP620, MP630, MP980

The photo magenta and photo cyan colors have been omitted and replaced by a grey ink cartridge in the MP980 to ensure neutral B/W prints (in combination with the photoblack cartridge).

Any chip resetter available ?

I was thinking of buying the Canon IP4600 but looking at your post it seems to me that i would be better off buying the IP4500?, after checking the specs of both products the only significant change is the ink cartridges, can you confirm please.

yes, only the change in the ink cartridges. Stick with the IP4500, since there is a chipresetter available for those cartridges and you don't have to refill the cartridges as often like the CLI-521 9 ml cartridges. And who can tell, you can refill those cartridges without any problems ?

Canon, Brother, HP, Ricoh etc.
So Canon like other manufacturers is still making everyone look stupid is a way that you buy anything they sell. And for any price they want.

CLI-512 dye: 9 ml (CLI-8: 13 ml)
PGI-520Bk: 19 ml (PGI-5Bk: 27 ml)

I mean HP is even more ridiculous for example HP 351 color 1.5ml of each color for ~20Euro.

This has to stop

I would say "Maybe a magical potion for to cure the insane stupidity of mankind" because if we will not buy it they will go bancrupt or increase the cartridge size.

Yes, majority consumers ARE stupid and they don't have (or want to spend) the time to study these forums and refill.

It's like they even read the capacity of a cartridge :(

For example most ppl will buy DVD+R media when it is cheaper in the long run to buy DVD+RW because you can erase it.
You can build a collection of ~200-300 DVD+RW that will be enough to store all your games and software you download and it will allow you to have 2-3 years archive not only recent versions.

Movies and data that do not change should be written to DVD+R media because it's logical to store it this way.

Same can be said about equipment cost, most tend to buy printers that are AIO and cheap, no one tried to think about running costs first and then decide if it is worth buying or not.

Hi

Do the IP4500 and IP4600 use the same inks?
