@mikling Canon don't do calibration, just readjustment of density to compense the wear off of the print head. This can be done very easy as you just need some few patches while for good calibration one should take 100 patches by ink channel. Don't forget that in a clibration file the ink limit for each channel is set in connection to the paper and print resolution. But it still remains a good approach from Canon to include this.

To get back to the initial post. It seems clear that HP's future in printing will be there: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/commercial-printers/pagewide-industrial/c500.html
Here in France the first of these beasts was installed last week. So, they will continue their progress with industrial machines. As HP allready splitted their activity by fields of activity they will continue to sell departements (computers to Xerox) and try to gather benefits with the remaining departements.
