My trusty MP830 is slowly giving up the ghost. Besides an occasional error message that clears with cycling the power off and on, the printer's scanner is no longer working. The scanner lamp light does not turn on, hence no warm up, and no movement of the scanner apparatus. This appears to be either a logic board or the scanner assembly from what I've read. The printing function still works perfectly.

Talked with a local authorized repair shop. I'd want the waste ink pads replaced at the same time. This significantly increases the price due to the time/labor involved. He believes he has a scanner assembly from another printer but may not have the waste ink pads and would need to cut a custom set from a different set of pads.

Anyone know where I can source waste ink pads for an MP830?

Maybe it's time to use the refurbished unit I have stored away.

I don't know if it is any help, but the parts number for the absorbers is QY5-0153-000. A scanner lamp seems not to be available separately, but the parts number for the scanner unit is QK1-2222-000.

sorry to hear of your MP830 woes. as you know it is a well built printer, well worth the effort to save. mine has over 50,000 pages, with one waste pad change that PeterBJ mentioned.

note that canon revised the part number on these, the orig part number was QY5-0153-000, but the 2 sets i purchased were QY5-0153-020. i confirmed with canon that the new part number is the revised part number. they did fit perfectly in my MP830. here is a link that shows the pads:

i poked around for you, was able to find a set on ebay.co.uk - under $9 shipped in the UK

looks like they have it listed is a few times with no bids, so you might be able to get them for the minimum bid. if you don't have a UK ebay account, maybe you could work out a deal with martin(websnail).

if you strike out and really need one soon, let me know and i can send you my last spare set. i won't need a set for another year of so.

I did look for the waste ink pads but they are few and far between to find. The UK eBay sale is a great price but the seller does not do international postage. I'm going to scout around some more, including authorized Canon repair shops as they may be mom and pop stores that do not advertise on the internet. Will call Canon and get a few more numbers.

@jimbo123 -- Thank you very much for your offer on the waste ink pads! You made my night. I cannot separate you from the pads but I do appreciate your amazing and generous offer. The repairman says he can customize a set. That should work fine. I hope.

In the meantime, I plugged in my spare refurbished MP830 I had sitting all these years. It looks and functions like brand new. Popped in my print head and cartridges, did a print head alignment, printed a perfect nozzle check, cleaned the platen glass, and then proceeded to scan and print about 100 pages of mostly duplex printing I needed for tomorrow. Wow! I am impressed. Wished I had bought a couple more of these refurb units! Luckily I have a couple more new print heads direct from Canon so I should be good for a while.

The question is what to do with my old MP830. I am leaning towards having the repairman diagnose as this could be a logic board issue and I don't feel like obtaining a new scanner assembly unit to find out it won't help.

It's only money, right?

good idea to call around canon repair shops, hope you find a spare set. making a new set might be a challenge since there are like 12 pads in all. since you have a working MP830 you could try to wash them out and let them dry. if you look at my pictures of when i changed my pads there was some ink but not as much as i expected. i doubt my 50,000 page MP830 will make it to another waste pad change but if so i may consider flying blind and resetting without changing the pads.

i do have one spare MP830(refurbished) left. FYI, my 50,000 page MP830 is also refurbished, think i paid like $99 or $89 for it. i have refilled over 370 ink carts over the 50,000 pages. so agreed should have picked up more for that price.

my offer to send you my waste pads still stands.

Looks like the ink absorbers for the MP830 are not to be found in the USA on the internet. I did see a stray offering elsewhere in the world but none that ship to the USA. The search on the scanner assembly did come up with a hit in the USA but the cost was well north of $200. I'd rather go for the salvaged part from the repairman at that rate. I never thought the scanner would go bad before the print function, which still runs like a top.

Will be calling around to some shops about waste ink absorbers and post my results. Meanwhile, the refurbished MP830 is awesome. Used up the PGI-5 cartridge in one sitting last night. The printer was smooth and quiet all the way.

Why not just let the old MP830 go in peace and put your money into a new pro 100, that would be a much cheaper option and a great new play toy too, it would also take your mind off your loss very quickly..

I have thought of it but decided against for a couple reasons: I primarily need good text quality that can stand up to highlighting, so pigment black is needed, and I have a no space for another printer at this time.

But I do like the way you think.

Called a few authorized Canon repair shops. None have waste ink absorbers for the MP830. One shop - IBEC Inc in Michigan - was patient and informative, so I thought I'd mention it as it sounds like a good place to go for those in the area. The man said he no longer has parts but only once had he seen ink overflowing from a printer and it was when a customer carried in the printer on its side. He usually would reset the counter back to zero, as has been discussed on this forum, since he found that the absorbers were not close to filled despite a warning from the printer. He also said the likely overflow location would begin towards the right front along where the seam between the upper and lower plastic case shells meet, and then it would continue across to the left side.

My local shop man is also friendly and informative - Personal Systems Plus in Ohio. Based on the conversations with these two gentlemen I would take my printer to them if need be.

Why not just buy a well-sized cheap cookie sheet, line it with a layer of paper towels, set the printer on it, and print away? When it overflows, tip it slightly, let it drain a little, change the towels, and continue?
