The problem with compatible cartridges and most bulk ink suppliers is that they don't let you know where they get their ink from so that they can change at any time without notice. If you care, you should buy from one of the suppliers that actually make their own ink and have a good reputation. I would recommend Image Specialist inks. But this only applies to refilling so it may not apply in your case.

There is possibly another reason why many ink sellers do not disclose their source or the manufacturer of the ink. It is purely a marketing reason. If I were selling a great product why would I want to tell anyone where I got the product from? There are probably hundreds or even thousands of sellers on ebay who would love to hear from me telling them where to get the product. It would be great news for them. But it would be suicidal for me.

Remember the ink seller alotofthings? It sold Formulalbs inks. At one time it was caught by its customers that the ink formulation was changed without telling its customers. They had to swap the inks for the customers who complained. The company blamed it on the manufacturer, Sensient Technologies, for changing the formulation without telling them.

Image Specialists had changed their formulation many times too. I don't know if they fully disclosed the changes to the customers. They used to have two types of black pigment ink for Canon printers. I don't remember the exact part numbers any more. One was a higher quality one and was sold for a much higher price. It probably did not sell well so it is no longer available. The curent one is much cheaper as cheap as dye based ink.

Hobbicolors had the same problem too. They changed their ink once and I do not know if it was fully disclosed to their customers. I think they had the old and the new line of inks for Canon concurrently for a while and the old inks were eventually discontinued. I have used both their old and the new UW8 inks. The current UW8 ink is definitely a better ink. I don't miss the old ink.

It is the way it was and it will be the way it will always that maunfacturers or ink sellers will change ink formulation regardless what the brand name or the reseller is. It sure will be nice if the ink seller can tell me where the ink comes from. Hey, you never know I may go to the manufacturer or the supplier directly to get the same ink. I think there are very few InkTec resellers out there. I can order from InkTec so why do I want to go to the resellers?

Anyway, I think it is purely a marketing thing why they don't tell you the source of the inks they sell.

I know of only one Inktec reseller in the USA, inkjetcartridge.com. I have had no luck lately buying direct from Inktec. Are you in the USA? If so, where can you order from Inktec?

You can look at www.inktec.com first. From there you will find www.inktec-usa.com then you will have a phone number to call. The guys there have no concept of customer service by the way. Be prepared to be treated with very little information and almost no help whatsoever. They provide no information about their inks. I was able to buy from them once. When they ignored my email for customer support I don't go there any more.

That's been my experience, too. I was hoping you had found another way.

Actually I am not so keen to use Inktec ink: I tried this before and the ink tends to fade much faster than Hobbicolors UW-8 and even to an unknown ink that was supplied with a CISS that I initially bought prior to the pigment IRK-4 based Inkrepublic.com's CISS. This dye ink based CISS was from www.coralgraph.com and I will post some fading tests the coming weeks after having the same picture printed on the same type of paper with a dedicated profile to get comparable results.

Already I noticed a considerable fading causing a magenta cast on the same picture printed with Inktec CLI-8 compatible ink on my Canon MX850. The one with the Coralgraph ink has a slight bluish cast, but much more acceptable. The same picture printed with my Epson Pro 3800 using IM K4 pigment ink is still crisp and vivid without the slightest fading.
