for fun, thought i'd try to gather some canon refill count numbers from this forum to see the limits being pushed

my refill numbers:
- canon MP830, refilling 18+ months using German Durchstich Method with ink in squeeze bottles
- PGI5 Black - refilled 33 times, 3rd cartridge
- CLI8 Black - refilled 9 times, original cartridge
- CLI8 Yellow - refilled 8 times, original cartridge
- CLI8 Magenta - refilled 9 times, original cartridge
- CLI8 Cyan - refilled 8 times, original cartridge

67 total refills

even have my daughter and son in law refilling their MP830

How often do you flush/purge your cartridges (or not)?

I usually just go up to 7 refills and start again using the German method.
No need to make a hole to flush.

Actually you do not need to make a hole to flush, but it is better to fully fill the ink compartment with distilled water (to such a point you see a white area inside the sponge) to counter the pressure during purging. and after purging you blow through the ink breathing hole to release the moisture through the ink outlet and the water inside the ink compartment will be automatically drained into the sponge.

Sorry if it's obvious, but is that before of after you purge with tap water?

I guess this is a refilling thread rather than a flush one..... or is it?

Actually the first step filling the ink compartment with water: it can be either normal tap or distilled water. I never use distilled water, because the reason after blowing out the excess of water I always use my cleansing/conditioning solution to rinse both the ink compartment and the sponge and then I again blow away the solution (any tiny rest of minerals will be flushed beyond detection and will not affect the ink).

Canon IP4600. I print almost all day at work and go around for 4-5 refills each day. 5 days a week means 20-25 refills per week, about 80-100 refills a month on all cartridges (except photo black - it lasts 2 times longer comparing to the others). Our IP4600 printers last for about 2 months, after that time they usually give the "absorber full" error and since we don't have a waste ink count resetter (yet), we just throw them out. So about 160-200 refills on each cartridge (canon original) and they still work pretty well. Of course we take care of them - using Durchstich refill method, flushing them after ~20 refills. I wonder how long can those cartridges last...

P.s. the only thing I hate about this printer is the magenta color. There is something different about the magenta ink flow in the printhead. I need to clean and flush my printhead almost every time I refill, because otherwise I get no magenta printed ^^ kinda weird

100 refills a month, that's quite a number. do you seal the refill hole ??

too bad about tossing out the 4600's after 2 weeks. maybe canon's "disposable printer" approach is working....

if you could reset the waste pad code or find a resettable printer you might want to consider a waste ink drain hose. looks like some epson users have had some success

I use a simple office tape on the refill hole (the original cartridge hole, not the one made by German method). No problems as far as no air gets in. Easy to get it off when flushing the cartridge, easy to re-apply again. Have not tried squeeze bottles as I use syringes for refilling that came a long time ago with IP4500 ciss system. It's a shame that I have to throw them out, hope a service tool for resetting is available soon. Almost a year has passed since I moved from IP4500 to IP4600 and still no waste ink counter reset tool is available anywhere. Looks like it's a top secret piece of software...

I'm confused about what you mean by the "original cartridge hole". Where is it?
