Tax cannot be avoided. Just a matter of how much. There are federal and provincial sales tax in Canada. Some provinces have recycle fees added onto printer.
Yes, 18-19% "value added" tax is included in most european countries.
But that isn't the only problem. Even without tax, Canon is always expensive in Europe (including England). There are a few large chains such as Pixmania that offer competitive prices, but not too competitive in Canon.
Yet in regards to a good multifunctional, it doesn't really matter. It's an investment. The fact that you can print good quality color documents with zero costs (only the paper) means that it will return the investment in a few weeks.
Because the item has an intrinsic value (let's say 100) in Europe VAT is levied on it, similar to the sales tax in the USA. Even food is taxed with 6 % and up to 21 % on electronics/luxurious products and also an extra tax on liquor (and other strong alcohol containing drinks). Furthermore: recyclation tax on electronics (several euro's depending on the item, on printers here in belgium I believe 50 eurocent) and in Germany even reproduction tax for AIO-printers......
