Hi all, I wonder if anyone's managed to overcome this issue or any advice to solve it?

So the support code '1206' says "the maintenance cover is open, close the maintenance cover & select ok", but the problem is that the maintenance cover is NOT open, its fully closed. This error message just won't go away, it pops up as soon as I turn the printer on (even before agitating ink etc) and I just can't seem to get rid of the message. I've run some searches online but surprisingly I can't find much info with this error message. I thought it would be more common.

The problem started when inserting a new maintenance tank after the previous one was full, so I replaced it with a brand new mc-20 canon maintenance tank but since then this error message won't go away.

I've contacted canon & they replied saying: 1. Inspect the locking tab, 2. Reinsert the maintenance cartridge firmly, 3. Hold the cover closed during startup, 4. Check for obstructions, 5. Make sure you're using a Canon-branded maintenance cartridge. I've followed all these steps but this error message has never budged.

If anyone has any help/advice to solve this issue, it would be much appreciated 🙏 I love this printer & it would be such a shame if I can't use it just because of a silly error message saying the door is open when it's not. Thanks for your time. Damien

Your printer is caught in an error loop, try to create a deliberate error that you know with trigger a response from the printer and so break the cycle, or try to short out the affected sensor.. ?

Ah thanks for the suggestion 🙏 I'm willing to try anything because since that error message popped up a few weeks ago, this printer is utterly useless & its a real shame.

I've never heard of a printer error loop so thank you for suggesting, I will go down a rabbit hole learning about this now. But I've just tried to see if I can get a different error to pop up instead by opening the front door where inks are, removing some ink cartridges, opening door where you can see print head etc, and I've also tried them all at the same time, then turned the printer off & when I turn it back on again the first thing that pops up is the same error code 1206 "the maintenance cover is open" even though all these other doors are open also. So I'll continue trying to create a deliberate error.

And you mentioned to try & short out the affected sensor, I'm unfamiliar with this, but it gives me a new lead to work with so I'll research that also. Thanks again for these suggestions mate 🙏 truly much appreciated

Does anyone know if this is the sensor (in the maintenance tank cavity)? chatgpt reckons this is the sensor but I'm a bit sceptical because I've poked/prodded it etc & it just feels like a little piece of plastic.

Thank you 🙏

You could also try and insert the old maintenance tank again, that might solve your problem..

I've tried that unfortunately, the old one was full, so I replaced it with a brand new MC-20 maintenance cartridge, that's when this problem begun, but I had another brand new maintenance cartridge (2nd one) that I tried to make sure it wasn't just this maintenance cartridge that's the issue, but nah, the 2nd new one didn't work also & this error message still pops up.

I've run some google searches etc & weirdly I can barely find any information on this issue, actually I think I only found 1 report on the canon forum where someone had the same error code where it says the maintenance cover is open when its not, on that thread the poster said they didn't find a solution so the printer was binned. It would be a crying shame to throw this printer away just because this error message says a bloody door is open when its not.
