Last week I had to reset my Monitor because the colours looked a bit off, my PMS colours printed all right but they just looked a bit weird on screen, they didn’t match my output.

Yesterday I was working in Illustrator and pasted the label on the left into Photoshop and it looked colour perfect on screen, but when printed to paper, it turned out looking like the one on the right, this was a saved file from old, not newly generated in Photoshop on Win 8.1.

Over the years anytime I had to switch to a newer O/S there was never problem with either my monitor or any of my saved colour work. but this new Win 8.1 is causing all sorts of defaults to change.

I’ve had to reset all of my colours and profiles in Photoshop to get everything back too normal, but the crazy part is there was no colour shift in Illustrator, as to why, well you guess is as good as mine, but I still had to reset the colours there too, just to be sure, normally both of these Application sing from the same hymn sheet when it comes to colour.

Anyone else having colour shift problems since their switch to Win 8.1. ?

I don't have any problem with color shifts. Old profiles made with Windows 7 works equally good in Windows 10. Are you sure something has been disabled or double profiling is activated ?

Me neither. Win 10 upgrade from Win 7 only required a screen recalibration and it was time to do one anyways otherwise ALL ICC profiles held perfectly.

I've got a Photoshop Elements ver. 8 for free. Officially it is only for Windows XP, Vista and 7 but it seems to work properly with Windows 8.1. Maybe I can do the same conversion of the PrinterEvaluationImage that caused problems for me? So what conversions did you do, maybe I can do the same using Photoshop Elements?

Thanks guys for the feedback, the colour change in my monitor may not have been noticed at first, but I couldn’t see how I could have missed something like that, but Photoshop was the bigger surprise, I had been using it for 5 weeks before the changes occurred.

Yes, I know I’m getting old, but stupid at the same time I think not, because I work in Photoshop and Illustrator together almost daily, so when Photoshop went FUBAR and Illustrator didn’t I knew it wasn’t my imagination.

Most of you guys work with photos and expect a certain quality from them, where as I work solely on graphics and am very much aware I may need a workaround to get a required PMS colour that’s out of gamut.

I work on documents that may not have been generated by me and may have a different profile, so I always choose the embedded profile to maintain continuity between two systems, these files go for Commercial printing, so they have to be right.

I had the same or a very similar problem when I bought a new Windows 8 computer 3 years ago.
When something like this happens to you, it’s not the same as when it happens to someone else, bewilderment is the first thing that comes into your mind followed by: “What the hell did I just do”, I reckon @PeterBJ is spot on with his assessment, because I encountered a very similar situation as he did but while using a different Application, thanks Peter...

Thank you for the info about "Embedded Profile Mismatch" The subject is not easy to understand but maybe I'm beginning to understand. I think the same happened to me with the "PrinterEvaluationImage" that is 40 MB TIFF and ProPhoto profile. Converting the the colour profile (or -space?) to Adobe RGB in Photoshop Elements produces an image that is much more natural. I thought the problem was 16 bit vs 8 bit, but the converted image is 43 MB TIFF and is still 16 bit per colour. It looks to me like Windows 7 and older can handle ProPhoto colours, newer Windows versions can not.

See the difference, the top image is ProPhoto, the bottom image has been converted to Adobe RGB:
