Hi guys, I have a Canon MB2720 with a brand new head that I sourced from a donor unit. I have put brand new refillable cartridges in and refilled them with a dye ink for all colors. The problem is, everything appears to be coming out very wet and gradually the blue seeps into the magenta. I am suspecting maybe the dye ink that I'm using is too thin. However, before I get a brand new set of dye inks designed for Canon, just wanted to check if anyone has any other suggestions to try and diagnose this? I am fairly certain it's the ink as even when the pull the print head assembly out, the blue kind of leaks out very easily through the print nozzles. I didn't actually know that thin (leaky) dye inks were actually a thing. This seems to mostly be a problem with the blue color. I have also changed my printer settings such that the color intensity is at the lowest value.

I wanted to rule out any possible problems with the generic refillable cartridges themselves, but seeing as the other colors (yellow and black) do seem to work ok, it leads me to believe maybe I have a bad batch of blue ink. Would like to avoid using pigment ink refills if possible as they are quite costly and I'm not too concerned about print quality.

Let me know your thoughts? Thanks.

These Canon printers are not designed for dye inks, you can do that with Epson but not Canon..

Go back to pigment inks and your problem will be solved, compatible pigment ink carts are not that much dearer than dye, your flogging a dead horse..

Actually there is no blue ink in CMYK printers only cyan. Blue ink only exists in dedicated photo printers and is actually a type of violet/purple ink. Magenta too is not red, because red only exists in some dedicated photo printers like the XP-15000 and the R1800/R2000 printer and is more a bright orangy-red.

Thanks, probably my mistake for grabbing the nearest bulk dye ink refil I had laying around to fill these.

Surprisingly, on Amazon there does not appear to be any pigment specific compatible replacements. There is one product that lists as compatible with PGI-1200 but it's a dye. Could it be assumed that they formulated the dye a little different (eg. Thicker) to make it compatible?

Fixed the link. The refillable cartridge I got is slightly different, but yes basically one of these generics.

I guess the reason why I was trying to stick with a dye is for standardization so that I can also use it on my Brother (it seems less picky on ink and will take anything). All other colors do seem to print fine, it's just really the blue that was "leaky" and even gets into the yellow. So that's why I was going down the path of questioning if there is a difference between dyes and maybe I got a bad batch of blue.

If this Canon is indeed picky with inks, I was also worried about throwing in a generic pigment. Especially since these print heads are thermal and $$$ to replace. In comparison, the piezo on my Brother is still good after 15 years despite much abuse, clogs, and forced uncloggings using all sort of chemicals.

I said dye won’t work in the Maxify, but it’s your printer, so go ahead and do what you wish… :th

Probably the problem isn't only the ink but the third party refillable cartridges.
Maxify users here know well that it isn't easy to refill an original Maxify cart and get a perfect nozzle check right away. Every time you refill one of these usually the user has to perform at least a couple of cleaning cycles until the nozzle checks are good. I expect that non OEM carts are even more problematic and I strongly advise against using them but, as @The Hat said, it's your printer..
