You know a trick to get polychrome prints with a single extruder and just one filament ?.
Get white filament and use acrylic pens of any color, to paint the filament while it's being pulled towards the extruder. I tried once and it works passably well, as long as you don't expect deep saturated colors, only light pastel tones.

You have to be really cheap, cheaper than The Hat, to sit and color for literally hours to save a few bucks.

Hard pass for me.

Who said sit for hours ?..No, I unrolled maybe one meter of filament from the spool and painted along it. It took half a minute to do so.
You got me wrong @stratman. That wasn't a serious try to paint a whole regular model using this system. I just wanted to know if the acrylic paint would mix well with the melted filament, and what the resultant color might look.

Besides, it wouldn't save me a single cent. The price of the filament is usually the same for all colors.

It was the logical conclusion for what you specifically said.

Maybe it is reductio ad absurdum, but, given the tens of hours reported on this forum for a project to complete, one would have to sit for hours painting filament if employing your originally stated method.

It was a good thought experiment. You tried it out. I appreciate that.
