Brilliant thanks so much for your constructive commenst and advice!!

So to get this right a good compromise would be to use non OEM inks, but use the cartridges which come pre-filled and then order fresh cart's when they are depleted.

From watching Youtube videos, you only have to turn the ink monotor off if you have physically refilled a used cartridge, because the chip will still tell the printer that the cartridge is empty even hough you've injected fresh ink in

Have I got this right?

Looking at The Hat's link for chips I thought $235 for 12 chips is a lot, and, the ad doesn't say ARCV or single use, so I will assume single use only till proven otherwise.

Then I looked up how much a single OEM Canon PFI-1700 cartridge is --- $300! Sure it holds 700 mls ink, but, you need 12 cartridges to run the printer. :th

Now those chips and refill inks don't seem so costly in comparison.

Of course $20 for a single use chip wouldn't make sense in small carts but it's very reasonable for huge carts ... if it works as advertised, which seems unlikely to me. Remember those "new and genuine" Canon printheads sold on Ali-Express ?. Nevertheless, I'd like to be wrong.
@Jonno, if you want to give those chips a try, please tell us afterwards if you've been lucky or not.

Speaking of these dodgy Canon print heads on sale in China, here one I came across going very cheap, notice the made in Japan is obscured, that should be a clear warning to all would be buyers.. Run don’t walk…

If the chips are not what they advertised then you can get a full refund without having to send the useless chips back..

First-hand knowledge:- I got several sets of ARC chips for my Pro 1, and when tested several months later turned out to be 1 time chips, I complained and got a 50% cash refund and also received several more sets free with an apology..

I wonder why the people who sold you single use chips advertised as ARC would do that, knowing that the buyer would eventually complain and they would have to send a refund ?. The only explanation is that they purchased the chips from the manufacturer in good faith, believing that it were ARC.
Anyway, I'd like to find a review of a final user reporting success with chips for Pro2000/4000/6000. I haven't found a single one yet.

Again thanks for all the comments guys, learning a lot.

For example, this supplier has a set of 12 x 700ml carts including chips for £750 shipped from China to the UK (unsure if customs tax will be applicable)

https://m.aliexpress.com/item/32862...1pvqkiL5TBuNjSspmq6yDRVXaK.jpg_640x640Q90.jpg

To buy 12 x 700ml OEM in the UK I’m looking at £3200.

I have to print sell quite a bit of print to recover that difference of £2450.

Several of these Chinese ink manufacturers have videos on YouTube and on their websites at print exhibitions showing the quality of the output on high end wide format Canons, Epsons and HP’s and looks very good.

It looks like the main hurdle is the colour calibration, would you need to change all the cartridges at once and then do the calibration in one clean sweep?

In my case I was dealing with the manufacturer, and these chips were new and didn’t reset the way they taught they would, I was the first buyer and it was the big chief that contacted me.. He reckon Canon had a hand in this issue..

Since then ALL chips coming out of China are one time because there’s no money in it for them on a one off sales, (Refunds ?) but they are now making the one time chip to be resettable in some cases, this only applies to the top end printers and not the CLl-8 type chips… Canon have become very active on the chips, and if you run your printer on refills and don’t have a working chip then your printer will waste ink quite a bit.. Waste ink pads fill..!

We don’t know what’s is in store for the owners of the Pro 200 and Pro 300 yet..

Only use new profiles when you’re on all compatible inks… The colour change is only very slight..

Brilliant thanks Hat 👍🏼

So in theory if those cart’s work, I could then either replace them with the same again, or buy new chips and refill them with ink myself?

Calibrating a custom ICC printer profile, using a spectrophotometer, is up to you. If you find the print to be acceptable using your currently installed printer profiles then no further calibration required. Maybe you can do a manual adjustment of the color settings in the printer's software and be good to go without a new printer profile

ICC printer profiles are specific to one printer, one ink set and one paper. Change any of these components and calibration can be significantly off. Or not so much.

Replace a single OEM ink with an aftermarket ink and you may want to calibrate a new custom ICC printer profile. It is up to you.

Aftermarket inks may vary from batch to batch and you may want to create a new ICC printer profile with a new set of inks.

Each paper you use may require another custom ICC printer profile when using aftermarket inks or if specific printer profile for that paper. (Paper manufacturers may offer their own custom made printer profiles, though these are typically designed for use with OEM inks).

It is all up to you. It is the blessing and the curse of color management.
