It seems like my Canon MP495 has bitten the dust and need to purchase a brand new printer.

I print mostly black (some 4x6 photos every now and again)
Needs to be refillable or at least willing to accept ink cartidges from 123inkjets etc
Must have a scanner and wireless printing and be under $100 if at all possible.

Canon software is a nightmare so would prefer to steer clear of canon.

Although I use a Canon MX850 for most printing I also have an Epson Artisan 810 AIO (wireless) that is used for photo and DVD printing. Am using refillable carts and Image Specialist inks from Precision Colors. Goes on sale at Office Depot and Best Buy in Hawaii and most likely other places on the continent.

Epson Artisan 730
Epson 730 has worked well for me. Wi-Fi or USB Scanner, printer, duplex printing, direct cd print, touch screen control panel, six ink cartridges, dye inks only and no pigment that can be temperamental. Artsan 730 has excellent print quality, both text and photos. Negatives, though minor are large footprint and somewhat cumbersome CD tray to load and dismount CD/DVD discs. Even so, hard to beat the print quality. Precision Colors, Canada has refillable cartridges and ink here:

Take a look at Brother printer MFC-5895CW, it's A3 printer that has refillable cartridges (no chips) that go into the side of the printer, cartridges are not directly installed to the printhead. You can clean the black or color print head separatelly.

It has Wi-Fi and LAN network connections and USB.
It prints very fast.
The Plain paper quality photos are almost like Canon Photo paper pro quality, but they print very fast. I was shocked to find out it has 1200 x 6000 dpi resolution at 1.5pl droplets.

It uses pigment black ink so text is sharp and clear, the other CMY inks are dye inks. The printer construction is very good, how many canons or Epsons have handles on the sides to help in moving the darn thing?

The auto scanner document feeder works like it should. BW Documents are copied very fast.
You can get bulk inks and cartridges at octopus-office.de or on ebay.

Check the Epson clearance site for Artisan models. I have several 725 models and they have others as well with the features you want.
I paid $99.00 for each printer and since the 6 dye based Epson cartridges cost more than the printer I went ahead and used the cartridges from Epson that came with the printer so the printer was "set up" and then changed to a good refillable set. I have the Dampers with the flip top refill holes and the (RATF) "refill all to full" chip bar and it all works very well indeed. The set cost me $39.00 plus a small shipping charge through the mail and I already have bottles of the Claria (Type) inks. The 6 colors cost me $10.25 a bottle for the 240 mil size. We print a lot and I figure we save so much money over buying the OEM cartridges that if we wanted to we could buy a new printer once a month with the savings. So far however we have squandered the cash savings on Hagan Das! Chocolate for me and vanilla for my wife! Happy Printing!
