After tearing the printer apart, I found out the problem (http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=23740#p23740 ) was a broken paper sensor lever/arm. It must have broken when the paper jam was cleared. There is a neck right before the 2mm round tip that was the weak point where it broke off. I spotted the broken piece on the bottom of the case after taking off the left side cover, but couldn't find where it came from so it took a while to get down to the source.

It is "QC1-6217-000 LEVER, SWING ARM LOCK" from page 7 of the MP830 parts catalog (see linked topic above for the parts catalog URL). It is $0.15 from DSN Products (http://www.dsnproducts.com/xcart/product.php?productid=70785&cat=264&page=11&js=n), but they have a minimum of $30 order.

Any advice on where to get this small part (aside from scavenging broken IP4xxx or MPxxx)?

Thanks

Have you checked with an authorized Canon dealer? The one in my area has generally been helpful in ordering parts without charging the minimum repair charge just for looking at a printer. If you can't find one that will help in your area, maybe you could call this one and ask if they will help:

niftylogue,.... Call Canon parts department at 1-732-521-7230 and ask for the parts department. Once they answer tell them you need to order a part for you MP830 and give them the part number. This will be a credit card order. Hopefully they have it in stock. Your other option would be to take the printer apart, which you will have to do anyway to replace the part, and glue the two pieces back together again.
