Hi LinBillo,
You could try keepimg the STOP button pressed for about 15 seconds, or until you hear the carriage start to move. This often works, the only thing is it wont show you the ink levels for the cartridge afterwards.

Are you still under warranty? If so, call Canon.

---------

Make sure all contact points are clean and no debris or residual ink obstructs the contact points or appropriate seating of the cartridge in the printer.

---------

Using Google to search on "Check Ink u163 col"...

From Canon Australia: http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/8200172900.html#6.

Same advice as magoolio posted.

---------

Found a more detailed set of instructions for your problem if magoolio's suggestion does not work:

The linked instructions are for a different model (MX310) than your printer which may or may not be appropriate for your model (MX340). Making any changes in Service Mode can result in a malfunctioning printer if you do things incorrectly. Fortunately, changes made in Service Mode can generally be reversed, but not all such as resetting page counts.

Still, the concepts of the instructions may work for you even if the Service Mode procedure is different for your model. Make sure Service Mode operations are the same between the two models before attempting the instructions or obtain a Service Manual for your model and see for yourself the procedure. You can enquire on this forum in a new thread about these Service Mode / Service Manual questions if no one helps on this thread.

I recently had this error, and apparently it is quiet easy to remove. There are four different solutions to fix this, depending on the model of the Canon printer you have. Check out this video: itjungles.com/printers/fixed-canon-printer-display-error-check-ink-u163
