I can only give this back: Thanks for sharing your knowledge! I think the GUI itself should work pretty well now. But I wanted to offer something easy but still good for inexperienced users. The problem was that I did not know myself which options should be chosen as good defaults. When I am thinking of an inexperienced user in my mind I have someone with an old Colormunki that he has not used for some time and might want to give it a try without putting too much thought into the whole process.

So what I‘ll do: when selecting the refinement option in guided mode it will use -n instead of -g but with the same number.

Edit: Update should be available :)

This weekend I will try the workflow both on manual and guided mode using my i1Pro2 and maybe my i1Pro1 too. Also the Colormunki will be used. Note: the i1Pro1 needs about 8-9 mm height patches, so the condensed (-a0.95) layout might be a problem, but I will report back how this will behave and report. I am happy to help you develop the software (I am a nerd in those terms), but I can help you to improve this fantastic piece of programming you have done.

I took that 0,95 value from your screenshots because I thought this is what you are using. With your recommended setting of margin 10 I got complaints on dpreview that my app fits one less strip on an A4 page compared to Argyll in the command line and how it was too beta to try. With the 0,95 patch scale it perfectly compensated for that so I made it the default but I can change that easily.

For your other question that you posted in the wrong thread: I changed the reference for the calculation in the last update. When you first mentioned the 32 grey and 4 b&w patches you also said something like 600 patches should fit on an A4 page. So I thought this related to those numbers somehow.
But on the first implementation I took A4 portrait as anchor for those values. A4 fits something like 520 patches for the i1Pro and I calculated the values for other combinations from there. But I had that 600 patches in mind that you mentioned and when I updated again I noticed that A4 landscape fits 560 patches (which is closer to the 600) and took this as the new anchor. Therefore it now calculates 30 grey steps for A4 portrait.

You can perfectly do: targen -d2 -G -e4 -B4 -g32 -f560 Profile_Name and have 560 patches in total with 4 blacks, 4 whites and 32 grey steps included.

For A4 landscape - yes. But for portrait it is a few patches less. Or I am using the wrong settings for printtarg to get the correct layout which might be the case.

Edit: By the way you may have noticed that you can let the app do the calculations of the matching patch count for you. It has a database of common combinations of instruments with certain setting (everything that is used for guided mode and a few more). But if you choose some exotic settings for patch scale and spacer scale and whatever and you set patch count to auto it will do iterative testing to figure out the correct number. It runs targen and printtarg in the background until it finds the number of patches that fits exactly on one page. It is just slower than the database lookup.

I look forward to this as I am still using an i1 Pro Rev D. Using -a0.95, I can fit 506 patches on a letter size page. With this patch number I might be able to do a precondition profile on one page and a final profile on two pages.

I have a rebranded i1Pro 1 rev A (HP spectrophotometer), that I found on the local second hand site, completely sealed and unused for a bargain price and best of all: it has that precious license for i1Profiler for printer profiling. Only the scanning jig was the first version without the scanning board, for which I have 3D printed a custom jig, that is way more ergonomical.

The 3D printed scanning jig prevents touching the (printed) paper surface unlike the older simpler version where you have to scratch the paper surface when scanning, potentially damaging the color patches.

Wow this looks nice. I wanted to buy an i1Pro3 from a guy in Poland. He told me it was completely new, locked in a drawer and never used. But when I got it it showed clear signs of use. Suddenly his wife wife or coworker might have used it once or twice…
I returned it because I did not have a good feeling about it.

For my app:

I added the option to not limit strip length for i1Pro in guided mode and made it respect that setting for the patch calculation. I also added A2 landscape as paper size (it should fit for an i1Pro3+ I guess) and let a script run against targen and printtarg to calculate the correct amount of patches for this in combination with all the instruments and options the app offers - took 2 hours to figure out all of the values.
In measure tab it now auto enables or disables the bidrectional measurement. In the ti2 file there is the name of the device the chart was created for. When it is for an i1Pro you can read left, right, left…
In the settings you can now tweak the grey emphasis for guided mode or the auto option in manual. You remember I anchored the 32grey, 4black and white patches to 560 total patches and from there the app calculates how many neutrals you get for the actual total value of patches. You can now change that anchor value there. So if you want you can set it to say 300 and get the 32g, 4b and 4w at this point already. You could make this even more customizable I guess but this would overcomplicate the GUI and in manual mode you can set it anyway.
Of course if you disagree please tell me.

@Alan G : would you mind if I added a thank you note to you in the apps settings window for your testing effort and for making other people aware of the app? If yes should I use only your first name or full name or anything else?

It's easy enough to find me on the Internet so you can use my full name which you should have from the Argyll listserve.
