Surprsised inkjet uses colors for BW

Was doing lots of black and white printing and my Epson printer (R2000) still ran down the color cartridges. Does the printer really need color for BW? Or is it a scam to still deplete the ink by the printer companies?

Yes inkjet printers do need the other colors to print B&W.
No it's not a scheme by the inkjet companies.

If you need nothing but B&W printing, get your self an Epson 1400 and install an all black system.
Inkjetmall or Inksupply
You may need to use a RIP to print in all black. The inksupply one does not require a RIP.
I use the 1400 with Inksupply 5K and Gloss Optimizer.
