Hi everyone, the thread title says it all really. I've had a Canon MP620 for about a year and it had been doing fine. I was happy with it, especially since I had discovered pharmacist's post on the German Refilling Method. Last month I started having a problem with the pigment black, and through the help of members of this forum (mainly ghwellsjr) I was able to diagnose the problem as a defective purge system. There is some debate as to whether or not the purge system problem was caused by the ink I was refilling with or not, but at this point I am not sure it matters. When I purchased the printer from Staples, I also bought the extended service plan. After diagnosing the problem with the purge system, I requested a replacement and I received it yesterday. Of course it was a beat up "refurbished" unit. It still had dirt and hair inside it and the platen was scratched. I called the warranty servicer to complain and they are sending me (supposedly) a Staples gift card for $149. So now my question for all of you is, what do I buy?

Here are my thoughts/concerns:

Now that I am familiar with the German refilling method and just recently purchased a chip re-setter for the PGI-220 and CLI-221, I'd like to stick with something that uses those cartridges and ink, unless there is a compelling reason not to. Of course after reading pharmacist's thread on Canon's replacement plans for those cartridges, I'm not sure how wise that is.

I need the scanner capability, anything else is a plus or not necessary. Again, if there was a very compelling reason, I would consider a separate scanner but I really don't have the space for it.

Of course, I also don't want to spend much more than the gift card is worth. Maybe up to $200 total.

Thanks in advance for the coming words of wisdom!

Canon Pixma Pro 9000 MARK II
@eBay are selling for crazy low prices of about $200-$230 new in box without the UPC as they are being used for a Cannon rebate deal when bought with a camera..
I just recieved one I paid $150 and $27 s&h cheapest you can fine them other than this is at B&H for $299 after a $100 rebate

The Canon Pixma Pro 9000 MARK II is a larger size printer but easy to be refilled

Thanks for the suggestion rarebear, but I am looking for something that I can buy at Staples since my warranty replacement is being fulfilled with a gift card from there.

I have the Canon MP640 and am extremely satisfied with it. It uses the 220/221 carts and are easily refillable when used with a chip resetter. It's fast, prints beautiful pics, capable of duplex printing and has dual paper paths. Plus, when firmware is hacked it prints on CD/DVDs.

@Mowerman90 - How long have you had the MP640? Can you tell me about how many refills you have done and which ink you refill with? Thanks!

I've only had it for a couple of months but have had several Canon printers in the past and feel this one is definately the best. I really only needed just a photo printer that could do letter sized prints but got a great deal from newegg.com on the MP640 for $99 + free shipping, so I couldn't pass it up. The speed and accuracy of the scanner is amazing compared to old Epson stand-a-lone scanner it replaced. Very fast warmup times.

I have only refilled 3 times using the German method using Image Specialists ink (Precision Color). I also hacked the firmware to enable CD/DVD printing and am very pleased with that option also.

@Mowerman - Thanks for the info, I'll add that one to my list of possibles.

I'm also looking at the MX870, anyone have any comments on that one?

The only MX series printer that can be enabled to print on CD/DVD's is the MX850.

I don't think the ability to print CD/DVD is an issue for me. I've never done it and don't see a need for it in the future. I'm more concerned with overall reliability and cost of use.
