We've been printing using refillable inks & Canon iX6850 for a few years without (too many) issues.

This last few weeks though, suddenly, both printers stopped printing yellow (and we've been using the same brand of ink for an age), unless you do a deep clean, and then the number of sheets it'll do ranges from a handful to not many more.

So we got new yellow ink from the suppliers, put in a new cartridge, new head, it worked for a few days then the problem returned.

Digging around here, discovered the purge unit could be an issue, so we swapped in a new iX6850, admittedly with the old head (10,000 pages) in, and it seems better, but still the yellow keeps failing, and we're just struggling to get a combo working where the yellow works. Starting to be at a loss as to what to try next to get the yellow working, and would appreciate any pointers

TIA

Sounds like it could be an issue with the purge unit — it might be getting old or clogged.

That's kind of where I was, but as I say I brought a new ix6850 into the mix a few weeks ago and we're still struggling on the yellow...

You answered yourself.. is that yellow ink. I gather it's dye an not pigment. How old it is and which brand ?. OEM inks are well protectd from algae/fungi contamination but that's not always the case with third party inks.
One efect of this kind of contamination is increased viscosity and that may lead to nozzle clogs..

99% times out of a 100 when you have an ink flow issue it’s the carts that are to blame, yes the purge unit can cause problems such as your, but it will effect more than just one colour..

Try purging the yellow cart and dry it properly and then refill and you might have better results..
