My guess was that the check valve would serve the double purpose of check valve and pressure regulator by adapting the spring stiffness to the area exposed to air in the check valve. A stronger spring would mean that a higher negative pressure was needed before the valve would open.
Maybe the check valves aren't reliable as pressure regulators? Membrane and spring pressure regulators are normally precision devices. I think the silicone tube pressure regulator is a brilliant idea.
