semigloss paper for pigment ink

hi everybody.

i have a mutoh RJ900 PRO, similar with an Epson 9800, filled with a swiss-made ink from signtrade. signtrade claims it is a premium pigment ink. i'm using this premium pigment ink and i'm not able to print on semi or gloss papers. where is heavy coverage ink rubs off very easily like a dust. i was trying various kinds of paper with no succes. any help, please?

Pigment ink usually does not make very good photos. Your best bet is to find a heavy weight paper without a photo coating. Usually it is identified as cardboard sometimes as just heavy weight paper with a white side.

Stay away from all coated paper with pigment ink. Just stick with the uncoated stock papers.

thanx for answers. today i made a few more tests and i discover that black ink is ok, adhere well to a lustre paper. but no luck with CMY. since the original ink in the printer was dye, i'm shure i can safely use dye. i'm using the printer for CAD drawings, but also for paper posters. is the dye ink ok for CAD? how fade resistant is for photos? what dye ink do you use for epson heads? do you advice me to switch to dye?

You could also try a swellable paper like Epson's or HP's they work with pigment inks but take a long time to dry and are not waterproof but you get good results with it.

This HP article discusses some of this subject. If you are printing high quality color images (posters), it is common to use pigment inks, especially if you need water resistance. Pigment inks are printed on papers with a nanoporous coating (see the article), and offer good fade and water resistance. Dye based inks can be printed on papers with either a swellable (better fade resistance, but absolutely no water resistance) or nanoporous (reduced fade and only slight water resistance) coating. For CAD drawings, you aren't usually looking for color accuracy or image permanence, so regular paper and either type of ink should be OK.

I find the porous papers to be completely waterproof, in fact with dye inks and a good paper like Kirkland or Kodak I find that the pictures are water proof even after 15 minutes in an ultrasonic cleaner which is no easy feat because even paper starts to disintegrate so if it's water proof in there it's waterproof 100%

Maybe it is not due to the papers but the type of ink you are using. I onced tried pigment ink (HP Vivera compatible) in my Canon i9950 (same as i9900) and it worked wonderfully well, but....the ink does not adhere well on almost any glossy photo printer. It was rubbed off very easily. Only matte papers and normal papers do well. My Epson Pro 3800 using Image Specialists K4 pigment ink does the job as it should be: vivid colours and no rub off. So your Mutoh if it is using a piezo-based print head should try to use a similar pigment ink like the IM-K4 ink.

yes Lyson should be OK, but I think there is a guy in Holland selling original pigment Image Specialists K4 ink.
