@The Hat, let me put it another way:

what new printer would you recommend that is easy to refill + gives good prints and lasts a long time?

the answer cannot be canon as they have the new cartridges (i assume)

@mikling thanks for the awesome reply. very educational. the only conclusion from which is that: don't buy new canon printers?

@The Hat thanks for the list. really useful. i did a quick check on amazon. ALL new canon printers seem to have the newer cartridge. am correct in saying this? therefore: advice should be... stay away from canon?

if staying away from canon... how are the epson printers when it comes to refilling? the newer models - are they any good for refilling?

On the contrary, Canon are still the refillers best friend and again I’ll repeat it’s only the 551/550 cartridge printers that have this impediment which can be overcome with the use of compatibles, so happy refilling.

I don’t have any experence with using or refilling Epson printers so I cant help you with that one, Epson followers may want to jump in to answer that question.
