If you keep the prints in a box, well protected from UV light and air oxidants, any brand of third party dye ink will last for years without fading. It's not only the inks but the paper as well. Some cheap superglossy papers combined with not very good dye inks will fade noticeably in less than a month if exposed to light and/or ozone. Using a good paper and the same ink, increases the lifespan several times. Let's say four or five months instead of one.

.....

PS: Contrary to the predecessor PRO-9500(II), I never heard of someone who had to replace a PRO-10 printhead or had the waste pads full (and the printer dates from 2013). FYI I bought one with 2500 pages and the waste pads were half full (D=048).
Probably the first printhead that you heard of being replaced will be the one on my Pro-10s :D
No problem, I have a spare printhead but, what worries me is that the page counter is now 2600, so the waste ink pads must be already half full. Therefore I have another 2500 pages to go and that will be the end of the printer, because I'm 99% sure that service mode is locked, after messing with a wrong version of the software tool.
Maybe I should start searching for a second hand Pro-10 right now ..:(

Just to understand, to me 2500-5000 prints are very low as an useful life of a printer like that. It's sold as a laboratory printer for shops at least here in Italy given the original price of ~ 1000€

Are you talking of 2500 borderless prints? if so could make more sense. In any case during the old days where was still supported by Canon even filling the absorber and waste pads was something they had to fix for you, free if still in warranty or paid if after the first 2 years.

9500 printhead is rated to last around 25.000 prints so I assume pads and waste unit should live more than this

maybe the previous owner of the printer did many unnecessary print head cleanings, that usage brings the counter up fastly.

From the manual of grandfather PRO-9500:

>1-3. Product Life
(1) Printer
Specified print volume (I) or the years of use (II), whichever comes first.
(I) Print volume: 21,000 pages
(II) Years of use: 5 years of use
(2) Print head
Print volume: 21,000 pages
(The breakdown is the same as the above.)

Black 1,500 character pattern (B5 to A3) 4,280 pages
Postcard 2,650 pages
Color 7.5% duty per color pattern (B5 to A3) 1,100 pages
10% duty per color pattern (B5 to A3) 1,670 pages
Photo, borderless printing (5 x 7 to A3+) 6,430 pages
4 x 6, photo, borderless printing 1,590 pages
Postcard, photo, borderless printing 790 pages
Postcard 730 pages
CD / DVD printing 1,760 pieces <

All what I know from these numbers is the printer did not self-destruct after 5 years...

The PRO-10 I was mentioning had strange enough also 2 printhead changes. It was used in a factory to print graphs.
I could imagine this was done with big intervals so a lot of ink and 2 printheads were spent to keep the printer operational.

But my first PRO-9500II (bought used) had D=048.6 and total page count of 2476 after I used it 4 years.
Most photos, 390 A3, 1125 A4 and 512 10x15cm.
This is not far from the PRO-10 numbers.
I never verified them, but 500-600 prints a year seems realistic, also compared with my ink consumption.

I bought my actual PRO-10 1,5 year ago at 150p and I am now at 1650. Didn't read the EEPROM yet.

The vast majority of users will be far below 5000 prints in 5 years.

In your opinion counts also the coverage? I'm recently using the 9500 for print black only graphics, around 400-600 A3 sheets already printed for a project in a month. Hoping they will count as ~150 photos because coverage is inferior.

Why worry, the EEPROM ink counter can be reset with commonly available service tools and you can add a printer potty.
Take care of your printhead (using enough ink for maintenance) since you can't replace this one.

Not so, the warrantee does not cover any support for the waste ink pads, or the ink cartridges..

No, the print count doesn’t work like that, the printer counts how many times it prints, it doesn’t matter whether its B&W or colour or how many characters you print, the wear and tear on a print head is exactly the same once its electrically used to fire out ink..

Look after that 9500 print head because your lovely precious printer will be no more than a door stop once the current print head develops a fault, they are no longer available to purchase.. That can happen anytime, so be prepared..

I couldn't sleep at night, that's why I switched to the PRO-10.
