Print quality IP8500 (8 Inks) or a 1pl model ?

I have a IP8600 (it's a japanese IP8500 uses the same P/H inks) and it's maybe on it's last legs due to some bad compatible ink carts and I'm looking for another backup printer

How does the IP8600 compare to the newer 1pl 5 ink printers ? or the 1pl 7 ink one's like the MP970 ?

Basically I'm torn between getting a new MP990/MP640 or second hand MP970 which means I can use my old IP8600 carts
On the cost side a S/H MP970 isn't cheap it's about 18,000 JPY for a boxed one with a MP990 costing 26,000 and a MP640 costing 19,000 New

As always with second hand printers there is always chance your buying a lemon.. :/

So any thoughts or insight into this would be great

The IP8600/IP8500 is much better than any 1 pl printer. Even it prints with 2 pl droplets, but the gradients in the lighter area's are more neutral and finer and more detailed.

I do like the IP8600 it doesn't use those damm chips and it's been a good printer it's was my fault that it broke because i used those refillable carts and they leaked causing purge problem

It's all cleaned out and the P/H has been replaced and it's working again but the drain lnk is 58pct full so hence the reason for the backup (and the wife was giving grief about not being able to print)

Using only Canon OEM carts and the german refill with Hobbicolors
