Print Nozzle Check On Clogged Pro 9000 (standalone, No Pc)

I have a chance of picking up a canon pro 9000 for cheap. Cheap because the yellow and magenta are clogged asthe printer has not been used for some time.

I have two questions:

1. I want to test the printer before I buy to see how bad it is. There will be no PC available to control the printer. Can someone confirm that these are the steps to print a nozzle check directly from the printer using the power and resume buttons?

First enter service mode:
- Power off Printer
- Push and hold "Resume" button and then push and hold "Power" button
- Hold the Power button, then release and press Resume button 2 times
- Led indicators must change
- Release all buttons
To print a Nozzles test, press "Resume" 1 time and press Power

2. What are my chances of unclogging the printhead? I understand these printer uses pigment inks and I have no experience with that.

I googled it and found this On page 50 of it's manual:
Print the nozzle check pattern to determine whether the ink ejects properly from the Print
Head nozzles. Use this function when printed results are blurred or the color is incorrect.
Nozzle check pattern cannot be printed from the Front Tray. Always load paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder.
Ensure that the Inner Cover is closed.
Printing the Nozzle Check Pattern Without a Computer
Nozzle check pattern printing can also be executed from the printer itself.
1. With the printer on, load a sheet of Letter-sized plain paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder.
2. Hold down the RESUME/CANCEL button until the POWER lamp flashes green twice, and then release it immediately.
The nozzle check pattern is printed. Do not open the Top Cover while printing.

I believe the Pro 9000 is a dye ink printer, the Pro 9500 is a pigmented ink printer.

The Pro 9000 exists in both a mark one and a mark two version. Your procedure is correct for printing the extended nozzle check from service mode for the mark one model. In service mode pressing Resume twice before pressing Power will print the EEPROM info, that tells when the printer was installed, had last printed, shows a list of registered errors, how many pages was printed, and more.

The procedure from iP4XXX is for printing the regular nozzle check as a printer stand alone operation. This operation does not involve service mode.

For the mark two model you will likely need a service tool to run service mode operations, so you will need to bring a laptop. Maybe the stand alone procedure for the mark one model will also work for the mark two model.

The Pro 9000 both mark one and two are dye ink printers, so the same procedures as for unclogging other Canon print heads can be used. The Pro 9500 is a pigment ink printer.

@iP4XXX and PeterBJ, thank you for your replies. I have sent an email to the seller asking whether it's the mark I or the mark II.
It is indeed a dye ink printer, I missed that one when I studied the information.

One more thing, I checked the printer specs and compared it to my MG6150.
The Pro 9000 has a printing resolution up to 4800x2400 dpi,
whereas the MG6150 has up to 9600x2400 dpi.

Does this mean the (cheap) MG6150 produces better (sharper) prints than the Pro 9000?

I think there is more to print quality than the number of dpi. The Pro 9000 is a dedicated photo printer that is using more cartridges, so I think colours are better. the Pro 9000 is also able to print A3 photos.

The two "clogged" nozzles may be clogged fromnot being used for a long time. The other possibility is that they may be fried if the owner had an empty cart warning and overrode it to continue printing until the cart ran dry. If there is ink in all carts I would bring a laptop that has already downloaded the drivers, install the printer, run a few cleaning cycles, and see what the nozzle check shows. As to the print quality, this printer does produce excellent prints. I've used it with Imaging Specialist inks from Precision Colors without custom profiles and been very happy with the results. the prints done at maximum size (13x19 inches) are beautifull.
