You do not say your make and model of printer , I am presuming it s a seperate tank for each color type printer. either Epson or Canon.

It should not be the end of the world. Your head will be cross contaminated for these 2 colors if you tried printing with them while switched.
Firstly locate the carts in their correct holes.
then:-

To clear this contamination you must print a yellow colored square/ rectangle on a piece of A4 (about 80% of the area), this is your "purge sheet". The first print will be probably be orange in color and (as the print progresses) the orange should fade to the proper yellow as the Magenta in the head is expelled along with the fresh yellow. I may take 3-4 seperate prints to do this......until it prints steady yellow from start to finish of the square/rectangle
repeat the process with a Magenta square.

Everytime on every head where contamination has occurred because of ink "sideways" contamination, this process has corrected the situation.
If the rubber gasket WITHIN THE HEAD fails then this process will not work (you cannot stop further contamination until the gasket is reseated or replaced).
This should not be your problem at this time, as you mixed the carts up (exterior contamination).

The carts should be ok after purging to use normally.

Sounds to me like he has a cartridge with a built-in head that takes three colors. If so, just buy another cartridge.

He talks about a "yellow hole!" and a "magenta hole ", which suggested seperate ink tanks to me, hence the form of the advice I gave.

As he did not mention re-filling i presumed he was just slotting carts in the vacant spaces.

Doesn't sound like he slotted the cartridges wrong, or he wouldn't mention holes and refill in the same sentence. From experience, this happens to people that have a tri-color cartridge with a built in head. You have to replace the cartridge if you cross contaminated the colors. The sponges inside are saturated with the wrong colors. Not much you can do now, unless you want to rebuilt the cartridge, which I wouldn't suggest.

As ghwellsjr said, just buy a new one.
